Creative Expressions of Health and Positivity with Art Therapy

Art has always been an expression of self. Looking to help those suffering from mental health issues, it should come as no surprise that art has become a therapeutic tool. Art therapy has helped all generations develop their creative side while exploring what ails them. Utilizing creative processes also helps those looking to enhance their well-being, self-confidence, and social skills. Going beyond just coloring between the lines, art therapy offers something for everyone, in good times and bad.

Art Therapy?

According to the American Art Therapy Association,

“Art therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.”

This shows how art therapy has evolved, merging artistic techniques with psychological concepts.

Despite artistic expression having centuries of examples, art therapy is actually a relatively new field. In 1942, a British artist named Adrian Hill noted that it was art that helped him not only recover from tuberculosis. Indeed, it kept his emotions from overwhelming him.

The actual profession started in 1915 with the Mother of Art Therapy, Margaret Naumburg, when she founded the Walden School in New York that promoted artistic freedoms in children. Today, counselors use art therapy to resolve situations from domestic violence shelters to skilled nursing facilities. All of these counselors strive to facilitate healing in a positive setting.

Types of Art Therapy

Perhaps the basic principle behind art therapy is that you need not be gifted. That’s because there is no right or wrong way to express yourself artistically. Individuals can use the technique that they feel most comfortable with. Thankfully, there are a few to choose from.

environmental artistPainting:

Oil, acrylics, or watercolors offer individuals the ability to express themselves with a paintbrush and whatever canvas they choose. While this freeform is soothing, professionals use caution with those struggling with perfectionism and poor self-confidence as controlling paint is much harder than a simple crayon.

Drawing:

With so many drawing utensils and papers, drawing is a preferred choice for art therapists with clients who have cognitive or motor skill difficulties. Certified art therapists know how to match an individual’s drawing with a specific mental health disorder. While not the primary diagnostic tool, this ability gives clinicians valuable insight into an individual’s thought processes and emotions.

Collages:

Through manipulations of items already constructed materials like photos and magazine pictures, the individual can build a glimpse into their mind. Those who participate learn how to use creativity outside of therapeutic settings. It can help individuals envision their goals like jobs they may want, spiritual awakening cues, or where they see themselves in the future.

Writing:

Creative expression isn’t limited to only colors. Journaling, writing letters, or simply telling a story on paper are ways to help trauma survivors put their thoughts into words. Writing also helps individuals to capture their feelings of the moment or, once again, be used for goal attainment. Individuals could also mix drawing or painting with writing to develop a masterpiece that helps their well-being.

There are other techniques such as sculpture or photography. And in truth, no artistic expression is off the table for use.

art therapyFinal Thoughts: What Can Art Therapy Really Do?

Whether you are using the artistic expression for help with troubling times or attempting to visualize your future, art is working in places you may not think it could. Here is how harnessing the power of creativity helps people heal:

  • Improvement of cognitive processes, including critical thinking and memory.
  • Promote insight, especially with overcoming problems or goal achievement.
  • Build emotional resilience through enhancing self, helping them adapt to stressful events.
  • Reduce conflict by bringing negative emotions expressing.
  • Enhancing the individual’s self-esteem and self-awareness.

The future of art therapy and the use of artistic creation brings with it endless possibilities. No matter where you find yourself in this world right now, positively expressing your feelings, hopes, and dreams could help you live your best life!

Even in death, the love that was shared can’t be taken away. You will always have the memories and feelings, no matter what, which is why life is stronger than death.

12. “The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not ‘get over’ the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it. You will heal, and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again, but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same nor would you want to.” – Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

Grief isn’t something that ever suddenly ends, and it isn’t something that you can get over. As Kübler-Ross explains, you will feel better and learn to go on, but you will change.

As you change, your life will, as well. You will find a new sense of normalcy, and you will feel complete again. Even still, you won’t get over the death of a loved one, but you will learn to live with it.

13. “Grief is a most peculiar thing; we’re so helpless in the face of it. It’s like a window that will simply open of its own accord. The room grows cold, and we can do nothing but shiver. But it opens a little less each time, and a little less; and one day we wonder what has become of it.” – Arthur Golden

You can’t control grief. It will come and go as it pleases and will hit you when you least expect it. As Golden describes, it is like a window that opens on its own and lets in cold air unexpectedly. You will suddenly feel it with no warning at all.

Luckily, over time, it will happen less and less. While you will still miss the person you lost, the grief won’t hit you so overwhelmingly and unexpectedly anymore.

It’s a positive way to keep their spirit alive in the world by keeping it alive in yourself.” – Patrick Swayze

Whatever it was that was important to the person you lost, see it through. Live the way that they would have wanted you to, and honor their spirit as often as you can. When you do this, you are keeping them alive inside of you.

Fifteen Funny Quotes on Marriage

quotes on marriage1. “We’re all a little weird. And life is a little weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall into mutually satisfying weirdness–and call it love–true love.” – Robert Fulgham

As Fulgham sums up, life is weird, and every single person is weird in some way. Marriage happens when two weird people come together and combine their weirdness. So, when you think of it this way, love and marriage are a little weird, but they are completely worth it.

2. “If my mother wanted to tell my father something during the game, she had a better chance of him hearing if she bought a ticket and went down there and held up a banner in the stands.” – Ray Romano

One partner in a marriage tends to like sports so much that they tune everything else out. When an intense game is on, it will seem impossible to get through to the relationship’s sports lover.

The best bet for the other partner is to buy a ticket to the game and make a sign to hold up. As Romano jokes, this is the only way to get through to the person watching the game.

3. “The most important four words for a successful marriage: ‘I’ll do the dishes.” – Unknown

Married couples have to help one another out with everything, including the housework. If your spouse often hears you say you’ll do one of the household chores, they’ll instantly be happy. The more often you or your partner does this, the better off your marriage will be.

4. “Marriage is an attempt to solve problems together which you didn’t even have when you were on your own.” – Eddie Cantor

Think about the problems you have to solve with your spouse. Most of them are likely problems you didn’t have before marriage. It will seem like a funny part of marriage that you probably didn’t expect when you realize this.

This isn’t to say avoiding marriage would mean avoiding problems, however. The problems married couples deal with are simply different than those that single people deal with. This doesn’t mean either situation is better than the other.

5. “I love being married. It’s so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.” – Rita Rudner

Everyone is annoying sometimes, and everyone does something that will get on your nerves. This is the same for you because you will be annoying your spouse often during your marriage. The key is to find the person you don’t mind being annoyed by, which feels the same about you.

6. “Marriage is like twirling a baton, turning a handspring or eating with chopsticks; it looks easy until you try it.” – Helen Rowlan

You have likely heard (or experienced) how hard marriage can be. However, it seems easy for those who have never been married, much like people think the things Rowlan mentioned are easy. Once you give it a shot, however, you’ll quickly see how hard it truly is.

Remember that the things in life that are the most worthwhile are the hard ones, though. Marriage is worth every struggle and every hardship. Find the humor in it, and you’ll be reminded that it will be okay.

7. “Being married means mostly shouting “What?” from other rooms” – Unknown

There are many times spouses can’t hear each other. It seems that instead of moving closer to one another, however, they try to shout louder to be heard. This is one of the funniest parts of marriage when you think about it because it is never dreamed about.

bad communication8. “Married life teaches one invaluable lesson: to think of things far enough ahead not to say them.” – Jefferson Machamer

You will often find yourself saying things you wish you could take back. Since you can’t take back what has already been said, however, follow the advice given by Machamer.

9. “Marriage has no guarantees. If that’s what you’re looking for, go live with a car battery.” – Erma Bombeck

Marriage is unpredictable, and you will never be able to guarantee what will happen next. The minute you think you have things figured out, then you’ll have another thing to overcome.

So, when you get married, remember this. If you are still looking for a guarantee on something, follow Bombeck’s advice and buy a car battery.

10. “For marriage to be a success, every woman and every man should have her and his own bathroom. The end.” – Catherine Zeta-Jones

Many arguments are started because of the state of the bathroom a married couple shares. Everyone likes things a certain way, and it is impossible to share a bathroom and have things remain in place. So, to avoid these never-ending arguments, it is best to have two separate bathrooms.

11. “I married for love. But the obvious side effect of having someone around to find my glasses cannot be ignored.” – Cameron Esposito

While you love the person you married, there are other benefits besides spending your life with your soul mate. One of those benefits is that they can help you find things you have misplaced. Without your spouse, you would have to look all alone and maybe never find what you are looking for.

12. “Marriage is full of surprises, but it’s mostly just asking each other, “Do you have to do that right now?” – Unknown

It seems that when you are in the middle of something, your spouse needs you to do something else. Then, they may ask later why you never got it finished.

Your best bet is to assume that your spouse always wants you to be doing something different than you’re doing. This is a cycle you will notice in marriage, and both partners are equally guilty of this humorous situation.

13. “The best way to get most husbands to do something is to suggest that perhaps they’re too old to do it.” – Ann Bancroft

You can nag your husband for months to get something done, and they still won’t do it. The minute you suggest that they might be too old to do it, they’ll get started on it.

Keep this in mind the next time your husband is putting off a task that you need to be done. It’s a pretty sure way to get them moving, as they will do anything to prove you wrong about them being old.

14. “At every party, there are two kinds of people: those who want to go home and those who don’t. The trouble is, they are usually married to each other.” – Unknown

It would be fine if the person who wanted to stay and the person who wanted to go home came separately. Unfortunately, those two people often came together. This is where one of the biggest sacrifices of marriage comes into play.

15. “It’s fun to complain with someone. Nothing brings us together more than complaining about other people. That might be the thing that holds us together more than anything.” – Lew Schneider

Being married means you will always have someone to complain about. They won’t judge you or tell people what you said, and you’ll feel better afterward.

Plus, you’ll feel closer to your spouse once you have both complained about people together. This strange and humorous benefit to marriage is one that can’t be forgotten.

Woman Who Lost 110 Pounds Shares Weight Loss Tips

Are you looking for weight loss tips from someone who knows the struggles firsthand?

Cassandra, formerly known on Instagram as “shrinkingcass,” managed to lose over 110 pounds on her weight loss journey. Once weighing over 400 pounds at her heaviest, she decided to lose weight because she wanted a better quality of life. While this brave woman knew it would not be easy, Cassandra felt inspired to take her health into her own hands. She also wanted to have the energy to keep up with her young kids and be able to do more with them.

She started by eating healthier, exercising at the gym, going for walks, and doing yoga. Cassandra said she had never really made health and fitness a part of her life, but knew it was not too late to start.

“I love exercise and being active. It is something that wasn’t even a factor in my life before, and now it’s pretty much my favorite hobby,” Cassandra said. She proves that anyone can begin a healthy lifestyle and actually enjoy it, no matter one’s age.

Cassandra Summoned Up Her Determination and Dedication

Her dedication led to her losing over 100 pounds over the course of two years. And Cassandra’s incredible journey showed her the importance of staying in shape and improving her health. Putting all her excuses and limitations aside, she put 100% of her focus on achieving her weight loss goals.

Her advice to anyone out there interested in improving their health and losing weight is to keep going, no matter what.

We all have days where we don’t feel like making a salad or powering through a workout, but those days make you stronger. “You will have bad days, you will have days where you get off track. Sometimes it would even turn into a week or month, and that’s normal, that’s okay,” she said.

As long as you get back on track eventually and return to your goals, don’t beat yourself up about taking a break. Life gets busy and overwhelming sometimes, and it’s equally important to rest your body and mind. Indeed, you can learn to relax without giving up entirely because everyone needs a chance to recharge. “You only fail when you give up. You always have to keep going.”

Do Not Worry About Perfection; It Is the Effort That Counts

We hope that Cassandra’s inspiring advice motivates you to work toward your own goals, whether in fitness or other areas of your life. No matter what you want to achieve, it takes incredible willpower and dedication.

Always give 100%, but remember to allow yourself to recuperate and treat yourself from time to time. Humans aren’t machines. So we shouldn’t expect ourselves to act like them.

Instead of trying to achieve perfection, do the best you can, with what you have and where you’re at. We all begin our journeys at different levels. So don’t compare yourself to others.

All that matters is that you become just a little bit better than you were yesterday. Going on a fifteen or twenty-minute walk will always beat sitting on the couch. So if that’s all you have time for, that is a success. You can always become a better version of yourself, even if you take baby steps.

Cassandra wants you to know that you can achieve anything you set your mind to, as long as you work hard and stay determined! You can always modify exercises and go at your own pace.

While her gym was shut down during the pandemic, Cassandra posted some of her favorite workouts to do from home. She didn’t let the shutdown keep her from her fitness goals, and she inspires many who also had to take a break from the gym.

Yoga Is One of Cassandra’s Favorite Weight Loss Tips (and relaxing, too!)

Cassandra focuses mostly on strength training, but she has found a love for Yoga as well. “Yoga has taught me so much lately, not just physically, but mentally and spiritually as well.

I need it now more than ever, with the craziness that is 2020, and so much uncertainty around the next few weeks. Yoga is truly the best for anxiety and stress relief.”

“Yoga is like my own mini vacation. Especially right now, when we can’t go anywhere or do anything, it’s nice to be able to take a mental break and just unwind and relax!  Exercise doesn’t have to be intense or make you sweat in order to be good for your body!”

Whatever type of exercise you enjoy, try to make it a part of your daily routine, even if you only have 20 minutes to spare. The more you work out, the more you will fall in love with it, just as Cassandra did!

Final Thoughts on Cassandra’s Weight Loss Tips

She says that you don’t have to have a “#fitspo” body or be skinny to enjoy fitness. We agree entirely, and we hope that you find an exercise you enjoy no matter where you are on your health journey. Memorizing weight loss tips is only part of the journey to a healthier life.

Remember, your healthy lifestyle should revolve around making positive changes for yourself, not just getting to an “acceptable” weight. While everyone deserves to feel comfortable in their skin, remember that every single body type is worthy, and your internal health is most important.

Research Reveals How Alcohol Abuse Rewires Your Brain

Alcohol abuse can cause numerous health problems, and recently, scientists have found it also rewires your brain.

A study published in Progress in Neurobiology on Novermber 13, 2020, found that changes in the amygdala’s cellular activity may result in alcohol addiction. The amygdala, a small almond-shaped region located deep within the brain, regulates emotions, behavior, and motivation. When the anti-inflammatory mechanisms and cellular activity become disrupted, it can result in addictions to various substances.

Marisa Roberto, Ph.D., a professor in Scripps Research’s Department of Molecular Medicine, and her team studied these changes within the amygdala.

For the first time, they found how alcohol abuse rewires the brain, specifically the amygdala. When they experimented with mice, they found a way to counter this process and stop excessive alcohol consumption. This shows promise for future treatment plans for alcohol abuse.

How alcohol changes the brain

“We found that chronic alcohol exposure compromises brain immune cells, which are important for maintaining healthy neurons,” says Reesha Patel, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in Roberto’s lab and first author of the study. “The resulting damage fuels anxiety and alcohol drinking that may lead to an alcohol use disorder.”

alcohol abuseThe study focused on a ubiquitous immune protein in the brain called Interleukin 10, or IL-10. Known for its powerful anti-inflammatory effect, this protein tells the immune system not to overreact to threats.

In the brain, IL-10 helps keep inflammation down from injuries or diseases, such as a stroke or concussion. Low levels of this protein in the brain have been associated with chronic alcohol abuse.

Mice with chronic alcohol use had significantly reduced levels of IL-10 in the amygdala and neurons didn’t fire properly. These factors led to increased alcohol consumption.

By boosting IL-10 signaling in the brain, however, the scientists reversed the unwanted effects from excessive drinking. In particular, they noticed a large decreased in anxiety and the desire to drink alcohol.

“We’ve shown that inflammatory immune responses in the brain are very much at play in the development and maintenance of alcohol use disorder,” Roberto says. “But perhaps more importantly, we provided a new framework for therapeutic intervention, pointing to anti-inflammatory mechanisms.”

Alcohol use disorder affects around 15 million Americans, and treatment options are slim, unfortunately. This study may lead to more therapies in the future, however, for those suffering from alcoholism. The key lies in boosting anti-inflammatory mechanisms in the brain, as high inflammation appears to exacerbate the problem.

Know the main red flags for alcohol use disorder (AUD)

According to the Mayo Clinic, here are key signs that someone may have alcohol use disorder:

  • Not able to limit the amount of alcohol consumed
  • Attempts to cut down on alcohol intake have failed, despite the desire to do so
  • Devotes much of their time to drinking, obtaining alcohol, or recovering from hangovers
  • Feels a strong urge or desire to drink excessively
  • Work, school, or home life suffers due to alcohol abuse
  • Continues to drink alcohol despite physical, social, or mental problems
  • Withdraws from social or work activities and hobbies
  • Drinks in unsafe situations, such as while driving or operating machinery
  • High tolerance to alcohol, so more is needed to produce the desired effect
  • Experiences withdrawal symptoms — such as nausea, sweating, and shaking — when they don’t drink, or drinking to avoid these symptoms

Heavy drinking can cause the following health problems over time:

  • Liver disease. Heavy drinking can cause fatty liver disease, inflammation of the liver, and cirrhosis.
  • Digestive problems. Alcohol abuse can lead to inflammation of the stomach lining, as well as ulcers. It can also cause malabsorption of necessary nutrients. Furthermore, it may cause pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • Heart problems. Excessive drinking can lead to high blood pressure and eventually cause a heart attack or stroke. Just one episode of heavy drinking can cause heart arrhythmia.
  • Worsens diabetes. Alcohol may cause low blood sugar because it disrupts the release of glucose from your liver. If you have diabetes and take insulin to lower your blood sugar, this can have dangerous implications.
  • Neurological complications. Alcohol abuse can damage your nervous system, causing numbness and pain in your extremities, memory problems, dementia, and difficulty thinking clearly.
  • Weakened immune system. Excessive alcohol intake can make it harder for your body to fight off diseases due to disruption in gut bacteria.
  • Increased risk of cancer. Long-term, excessive alcohol use can increase the risk of many cancers, including mouth, throat, liver, esophagus, colon, and breast cancers.

Further findings from the study

In the study referenced above, Roberto and her team collaborated with Silke Paust, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology. Paust and her team found increased levels of immune cells known as microglia and T-regulatory cells in mice with chronic alcohol use. These immune cells produce IL-10, the anti-inflammatory protein.

However, while the mice had higher levels of IL-10 in their brains overall, the amygdala showed much lower levels.

In the amygdala of mice with alcohol abuse, the signaling of the proteins didn’t function properly. This suggests that the immune system in the amygdala, specifically, responds differently to an alcohol use disorder.

This study reinforces prior research by Roberto and her team which showed the correlation between microglia and alcohol abuse. In the future, studies will investigate further how and when IL-10 signals to neurons in the amygdala.
alcohol abuseFinal thoughts on the research showing how alcohol abuse rewires your brain

Alcohol abuse not only damages the brain but can cause numerous other health problems as well. A recent study showed how excessive alcohol consumption can alter brain function by decreasing an anti-inflammatory protein in the amygdala.

This small almond-shaped area of the brain controls emotions, motivation, and behavior, all of which play a role in developing an addiction. However, scientists believe that targeting and boosting IL-10 signaling in the brain can reverse alcohol abuse.

Future studies will analyze more deeply the connection between this protein and alcohol abuse. Researchers hope that therapies moving forward will focus more on anti-inflammatory compounds and supplements.

Global Study Reveals Poor Nutrition Causes 20cm Height Gap in Children

A global analysis performed by Imperial College London found that poor nutrition created a large height gap among children. Researchers looked at the height and weight of school-aged children and adolescents in 193 countries around the world. The study assessed data from 65 million children between ages 5 and 19 years old.

Published in the journal The Lancet on November 7, 2020, the analysis revealed that children’s height and weight vary dramatically worldwide.

Researchers found that 19-year-olds in the tallest and shortest nations had a 20cm height difference upon looking at the data. This indicated an eight-year growth gap for girls and a six-year gap for boys. For example, researchers found 19-year-old girls in Bangladesh and Guatemala had the same height, on average, as 11-year-old girls in the Netherlands. But, why is there such a discrepancy between these countries?

The team concluded that a lack of quality nutrition in childhood might cause stunted growth and even childhood obesity. Nations with shorter children typically have higher overall obesity rates, suggesting poor access to healthy food. This could lead to health problems that follow children well into adulthood if not addressed early on.

Height analysis among the nations

poor nutritionThe research covered data from 1985 to 2019 and found that the tallest 19-year-olds lived in the northwest and central Europe. The nations with the tallest children included the Netherlands, Montenegro, Denmark, and Iceland. The shortest 19-year-olds in 2019 were mostly from south and southeast Asia, Latin America, and East Africa. Countries included Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Guatemala, and Bangladesh.

Their data analysis also showed that children’s height improved most in growing countries like China, South Korea, and other parts of southeast Asia. For instance, average 19-year-old boys in China in 2019 gained 8cm in height since 1985. They had previously been ranked the 150th tallest country in 1985, and in 2019 they moved up to 65th place. However, particularly boys, the height of children in many Sub-Saharan African nations decreased or remained stagnant since 1985.

The UK’s global height ranking also fell over the past 35 years. In 1985, 19-year-old boys ranked as the 28th tallest globally, but in 2019, this dropped to 39th. 19-year-old girls went from 42nd tallest to 49th.

BMI comparison across the globe

The researchers looked at children’s Body Mass Index (BMI), which gives a height to weight ratio. This tells doctors if a person’s weight falls into a healthy range for their height. The global analysis found that 19-year-olds in the Pacific Islands, the Middle East, the US, and New Zealand had the highest BMI. In comparison, 19-year-olds living in south Asian countries like India and Bangladesh had the lowest BMI.

The difference between the highest and lowest BMIs came out to around 9 units of BMI or about 55 pounds. The international team’s analysis found that children at age five had a healthy height and weight as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). However, they discovered large variations in children’s health across countries after this age. For example, some children gained too little height or too much weight compared to markers for healthy growth.

The research team believes that more than any other factor, poor nutrition, and the living environment during childhood cause these health problems. Both height and weight gains have strong correlations to the quality of a child’s nutrition, especially in the early years.

What this data reveals about poor nutrition

Based on the data, you can see how the diets of these nations impact height and weight. For example, in the US, most people have an abundance of food choices, but obesity rates stand around 40%. However, the US ranks near 40th for the tallest people in the world. On the other hand, countries in Africa and Asia, for example, have low BMIs but suffer from nutrient deficiencies and stunted growth.

Children’s health largely depends on food availability and living environment, which explains the variability in data. In the U.S. and other westernized nations, more access to processed foods and sugar play a large role in obesity. In developing nations, a lack of quality food and a harsh environment often leads to malnutrition and other health problems.

Professor Majid Ezzati, the senior author of the study from Imperial’s School of Public Health, said:

Children in some countries grow healthily to five years, but fall behind in school years. This shows that there is an imbalance between investment in improving nutrition in pre-schoolers, and in school-aged children and adolescents. This issue is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic when schools are closed throughout the world, and many poor families are unable to provide adequate nutrition for their children.

Dr. Andrea Rodriguez Martinez, the lead author of the study from Imperial’s School of Public Health, added, “Our findings should motivate policies that increase the availability and reduce the cost of nutritious foods, as this will help children grow taller without gaining excessive weight for their height. These initiatives include food vouchers towards nutritious foods for low-income families and free healthy school meal programs, which are particularly under threat during the pandemic. These actions would enable children to grow taller without gaining excessive weight, with lifelong benefits for their health and wellbeing.”

water shortages

The United Nations advises that billions could of people face water and food shortages in about thirty years.

Final thoughts on this study that shows poor nutrition causes a height gap among children

A global analysis recently revealed that a 20cm height gap exists between children in the tallest and shortest nations worldwide. Researchers explain that poor nutrition in childhood, along with living conditions, may explain the disparities. They found that the tallest 19-year-olds came from most central and northwest Europe. The shortest-lived in the southern and southeast Asia, Latin America, and East Africa.

As you can see, malnutrition continues to affect low-income nations and families around the globe. However, addressing the core problem by lowering the cost of healthy foods can lead to an epidemic of health rather than disease. Everyone on Earth deserves access to fresh, nutritious foods, and governments should work with schools to provide children with this opportunity.

Dietitians Explain What Food Labels Reveal about Nutrition

Food labels aren’t exciting to read,  but they help you make healthy food choices for your family. Here’s a quick guide on reading food labels and what they tell you about the food you’re buying.

Food label history

Early food labels contained little information. Dietitians explain that first-generation food labels mandated that some foods display “specialty dietary uses”  for people with health conditions. This was usually only the calorie and sodium content.  Meals were typically prepared at home and were made from scratch, so was no need for nutritional information. With the increase in processed foods, people wanted to understand better the foods they were buying. In 1970, in response to consumers’ requests, the FDA developed a system for labeling foods. Food labels have evolved over the years with changes in format and content.

The FDA requires that food labels must contain. The National Institutes of Health provides this sample label:

food labels

  • Serving size
  • Calories
  • Carbohydrates
  • Total fat
  • Saturated fats
  • Trans fats
  • Cholesterol
  • Sodium

What other information is on food labels?

Package labels also include other information about vitamins, minerals, or other food items consumers should know.

Sugars

Sugars are listed under carbohydrates along with fiber content. Foods like candy, soda, and snack foods contain a lot of added sugar. High-fiber fruits and vegetables contain only natural sugar.

Protein

The label will also list protein under the sugars. You need protein to help your immune system, skin, muscles, and hair stay healthy. Doctors say you should eat a high protein diet to optimize health. Foods high in protein include:

  • Beef
  • Poultry
  • Eggs
  • Beans
  • Cheese
  • Nuts and seeds

Vitamins  A and C

Vitamins A and C must be on food labels. The amount of these vitamins per serving is a percentage of the vitamin’s daily requirement. This is based on a diet with 2,000 calories.  Vitamin C is found in citrus foods, strawberries, blackberries, potatoes, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. Carrots, squash, dark leafy greens, and all orange-colored vegetables contain Vitamin A.

Reading food labels

Where do you start when reading a food label? Although there’s no right or wrong way to read a food label, it’s helpful to start at the top and work your way down.

1 – Calories

First, starting at the top of the label, check out the serving size, the number of servings per package, and calories per serving. Compare how much you eat to the serving size listed. So, for instance, on the above label, you see that one cup is 260 calories. If you consume two cups, you’re eating 520 calories plus more fat and other ingredients listed on the label.

2 –  % of Daily Values

Next, look at the percentage of your daily food values. The daily values on a food label the nutrients needed to eat an average of 2,000 calories a day.  Your recommended daily calories depend upon your BMI, age, height gender, weight, and activity level. If you’re curious about how many calories you should be eating every day, check out this calorie calculator to help you. The list of daily values will be a percentage of the total calories.

3 – Fats

Bad fats: You should aim to eat low fat. Saturated and trans fat are considered unhealthy. These include:

  • Butter
  • Margarine
  • Beef fat
  • Pork fat
  • Shortening

Try to avoid eating foods with these types of fat such as these:

  • Fatty meats and the skin of meats
  • High-fat milk
  • Cheese
  • Ice cream
  • Sour cream
  • Tropical oils like coconut, palm, and cocoa butter
  • Fried foods-French fries, fried meats, and other fried foods
  • Snack foods like potato chips, microwave popcorn, and crackers

Eating a high amount of saturated and trans fats will increase your cholesterol levels.

Healthy fats:

Eat foods with monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats. These good fats are a liquid when they’re at room temperature. The foods with healthy fat include the following selections:

  • Walnuts
  • Vegetable oils like olive or canola
  • Peanut butter
  • Avocado
  • Salmon
  • Mackerel
  • Flaxseeds
  • Chia seeds

4 – Carbohydrates

Aim for high-fiber, whole wheat carbs like quinoa, brown rice, whole wheat bread, or whole wheat pasta.

5 – Low cholesterol

Choose foods low in cholesterol. This choice improves heart health, according to nutritionists and multiple studies.

6 – Vitamins and Minerals

Eat enough potassium, calcium, vitamin D, and iron. Aim to eat many foods with a high percentage of daily value from these, such as fruits and veggies.

pop memeWhat about the ingredients?

Food ingredients aren’t listed on food labels, but they are listed somewhere on the package. The Ingredients are listed highest to lowest according to weight. If an ingredient is at first on the list, there is more of it in the food. So, if you’re trying to avoid sugar and it’s at the top of the list of ingredients, then the food probably isn’t for you.

Do you need to read every label?

If you read every label on every product in the grocery store, you’d be there all day. That’s not an option, so what can you do to understand the nutrition in your food? It’s suggested that shopping will be easier when you get familiar with the food labels. They also suggest that you look mainly at the serving size per container, comparing this with other products like it then choosing the one with the lowest calories. If you’re watching your sugar or sodium, you’ll want to look at how much is in the food. As you study the labels over time, you’ll begin to remember which products are healthiest.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has created an easy to use the shopping list to stay within your nutrition goals. They suggest you break your foods into GO, SLOW, or WHOA categories. Healthy foods should be on the GO lines, not as healthy foods on the SLOW lines, and WHOA foods should be avoided if possible.

What are GO, SLOW, or WHOA foods?

GO foods include:

  • Low fat and sugar
  • Low calories
  • Rich in nutrients: vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients
  • Good for you

SLOW foods include:

  • Higher in fat
  • Higher in sugar
  • Somewhat in calories
  • Okay to eat once in a while

WHOA foods include:

  • Highest in sugar and fats
  • High in calories
  • Low in nutrition
  • Eaten for special occasions like holidays, but small portions.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute also offer a colorful picture chart, called U R What U Eat, depicting the healthiest foods using GO, SLOW, and WHOA ideas. This would help teach your kids the importance of healthy eating, but no matter what age you are, this chart will help you remember to eat healthily.

Strange trivia about food labels you should know

The concept of a food label seems rather straightforward, but here is some little known food label trivia you haven’t heard.

  • If food has less than 5 calories, the food label will record it as calorie-free. Examples include fat-free salad dressing, gum, diet soda, matcha, and celery.
  • If there is less than 1/2 gram of fat, the food label will list 0 grams.
  • A maraschino cherry’s serving size is 1 cherry.
  • Food label serving sizes is the amount of food eaten by someone 4 years old and older. So, if the serving size lists 10 crackers on the food label, you will want to decide the number of crackers your child should eat based on their calorie needs rather than the servings listed.

What the package says, and what it really means

What the food packaging says is not necessarily what it means. Take a look:

  • Light: It really means watered down. Look on the food label to see if they have added extra sugar.
  • Natural: This means the manufacturer worked with something natural at some point during food production. It doesn’t mean the product is really natural.
  • Multi-grain: This isn’t as healthy as it sounds. This only means that there is some grain in this food product, but not necessarily a whole grain.
  • Organic: Organic farmers raise foods that are free of chemicals, pesticides, or other harmful ingredients.
  • No sugar added: This is another misnomer. No sugar can mean the food may contain a lot of sugar substitutes. These substitutions prove harmful, as well.
  • Low fat: Products listed as low fat often contain extra sugar. Read your food labels.
  • Whole-grains: If you’re looking for real whole-grain foods, look at the ingredients. The food is truly whole grain if whole grains are listed in the first three ingredients. If not, this isn’t a whole-grain product.
  • Fruit flavored: Many processed foods have fruit in their names without using any fruit in their product. They use chemicals to get the fruit flavor.

food labelsFinal thoughts on understanding how to read food labels and packaging

Food labels may not be bestsellers, but they help you choose the best foods for you and your family. Read food labels as often as you can, and over time you will remember what products are lowest in fats and sugars and other healthy ingredients. Of course, fresh fruits and vegetables need no labels. Buy these products without fear of getting unhealthy foods. Don’t forget to read the ingredient lists, too. Just remember that those ingredients listed first are weighted heavier. Reading food labels is a straightforward way to start eating healthier this year.
