Dietician Reveals How Apple Cider Vinegar Is Best For Losing Belly Fat

If you follow dieticians on social media, you have probably seen some references to apple cider vinegar. You may have even heard how beneficial it is for your health. Apple cider vinegar helps with many issues like dandruff and digestive problems. Some studies show it may have the ability to lower blood sugar and insulin levels. This is crucial for people that suffer from diabetes or are at risk of developing it.

Apple cider vinegar for weight loss has been studied in countries worldwide. Researchers have found that acidic acid may actually help break down fat. More research is needed to prove how exactly acidic acid effects fat cells if it does at all. There are, however, other ways which apple cider vinegar may help you with belly fat loss.

Different Ways Apple Cider Vinegar Can Help Fat Loss

Lower Blood Sugar Levels

Anyone familiar with the Keto diet knows you must control your blood sugar. By limiting carbohydrates and sugary foods, blood sugar control is manageable. Some say a spoon of ACV before you eat a meal does the same and will prevent your blood sugar from spiking. Acedic acid might help your liver and muscles better absorb sugars in your body. This may result in lower blood sugar.

Appetite Suppressant

It is a known fact that if you can control your appetite you will not consume many calories. Properties of ACV have been said to suppress the appetite control region of your brain. When you control your appetite, you will consume fewer calories. This can cause a calorie deficit, which leads to weight loss.

Better Digestion

The use of ACV has been linked to helping with digestive issues. ACV helps by blocking undesirable enzymes. These enzymes are called disaccharidases. They break down starches during digestion. Acedic acid inhibits this process from happening. When your body cannot absorb carbohydrates, you won’t experience blood sugar spikes.

Improved Metabolism

Scientific studies have shown ACV consumption can, in fact, increase an important enzyme for fat burning. Lipase enzymes are the key to breaking down fats into fatty acids and glycerol. Lipase gets some help from bile, which is excreted by your liver. Bile helps to break the fat cells down into smaller pieces before lipase gets to destroy the rest. This entire metabolic process may leave you with a smaller waistline.

Decreased Insulin Levels

A study found in the journal of the American Diabetes Association came to a surprising conclusion. It suggested insulin sensitivity would improve if ACV was taken with a meal. This result was found true in patients that either had type 2 diabetes or were insulin resistant. Like controlling blood sugar spikes, controlling insulin sensitivity could be a good way to lose fat.

Cut Fat Storage Capabilities

It is possible to block the gene responsible for fat storage. Differences in the gene Ankyrin-B could be what is responsible for many people gaining weight uncontrollably. In studies, rats that were given acetate or acedic acid were less likely to gain weight and store fat. Instead, the genes responsible for reducing fat in the belly and liver were released. These rats stayed thinner than those without the acids. This is very promising research.

The Best Ways to Consume ACV

There are many ways you can consume apple cider vinegar for weight loss. Many people will do one or more of the following:

  • Dillute it with another liquid and drink it
  • Mix it with olive oil and herbs to create salad yummy dressings
  • Use it to pickle fresh vegetables for snacking

These are not the only ways to incorporate ACV into your diet. Here are some creative ways to get your daily dose of ACV.

ACV and Honey Drink

If you like to keep it simple, mix together 2 cups of water, 4 tablespoons of ACV and 1/4 teaspoon of honey. Mix it well to make sure the honey is fully dissolved, then enjoy. For an extra special kick, use sparkling water.

ACV Tea with Honey

This next drink is amazing for colds or simply to drink to wind down in the evening. Combine hot water, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of ACV, 1 tablespoon of raw organic honey and a teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Mix this well and enjoy.

Many studies have shown proof that there is something about ACV and its ability to help you lose belly fat. With this in mind along with the fact that it is great for your all-around health, trying this vinegar could help you reach your health goals. Be sure to keep it interesting by consuming it different ways.

15 Things That Happen to Your Body When You Sleep (That Most People Don’t Realize)

Have you ever wondered why weird things happen when we sleep? Some of us talk and sleepwalk while we’re snoozing. In our dreams, we can fly, breathe underwater, and just about anything else you can think of. It’s not a stretch to imagine Lewis Carroll penning the masterful “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” after arising from a vivid dream (which we’ll also talk about.)

Sleep experts have a pretty good idea why many of these things happen. Unsurprisingly, much of what we experience while sleeping is a direct product of brain-body connection. Let us consider some of those things that happen to your body when you sleep – and why they occur.

15 Things That Happen to Your Body When You Sleep

  1. You Start “Falling”

The sensation of falling is very common and is caused by a sudden muscle twitch or hypnic jerk. About 70 percent of people experience hypnic jerks, which occur during the first stage of sleep when the body begins to fall into a deep rest and the brain hasn’t “caught up.”

  1. You Have Wacky Dreams

For all the crazy things that happen while sleeping, we only have two sleep modes: rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM). It is during REM when our brain fires neurons at a crazy rate. In fact, there is more brain activity during REM than when we are awake. This brain activity sometimes causes the intense dreams we experience from time to time.

  1. You Start Babbling

Sleep talking happens when, for a brief moment, the normally-inactive mouth and vocal cords respond to a motor impulse in the brain. Chronic cases of sleep talking are rare and are considered a sleep disorder, though doing this occasionally is normal.

  1. Your kidneys slow down

Six-plus hours is a long time to go without tinkling. Like many other organs of the body, kidneys slow to hum while we get our shut-eye. The bladder becomes full, and we proceed to eject a seemingly endless amount of urine upon waking up.

  1. You form new memories

During NREM, which comprises about 75 to 80 percent of our total sleep time, our brain absorbs and stores memories. It is during the NREM phase of sleep when the brain “transfers” short-term memories into long-term storage.

  1. You are paralyzed

During REM sleep, the brain chemicals GABA and glycine combine to paralyze the skeletal muscles. Scientists posit that this chemical reaction within the brain is a survival mechanism, designed to keep us from acting out our dreams during sleep. When this neural system goes haywire, a person may suffer from sleep paralysis – a condition wherein the person is conscious yet unable to move.

  1. You pass gas

Okay, so this one is no secret to any married person, but we fart when the body is at rest. All our muscles are relaxed when we slumber, including the, ahem, sphincter. Anyways, the good news is that, because your partner is also sleeping, they shouldn’t have to suffer … probably.

  1. You go through five “stages” of sleep

There are five stages of sleep, each lasting between 90 to 110 minutes. The first stage involves a drift into and out of consciousness. The second stage is light, while the third and fourth stages involve deep sleep. During the fifth stage, our brain activity increases, and we enter REM.

  1. Your heart slows

During NREM, our heart rate is both slow and steady. As NREM makes up most of the time when we sleep, this gives our heart a chance to rest and recharge. Our blood pressure and breathing also slow.

  1. You get colder

While awake, our body goes through the process of thermoregulation – adjustment of internal body temperature due to the changes in the body or environment. This process isn’t as active when our body is at rest, probably to conserve energy.

  1. You get your “beauty sleep.”

We’ve known for a long time that sleep induces processes linked to cellular growth and repair. This cellular healing extends to collagen within the skin. Collagen promotes skin health by enhancing its elasticity and firmness. Hence, the term “beauty sleep.”

  1. You do a “brain dump.”

How much useless information do we absorb on a given day? A lot, unfortunately. Per a study published in the journal Science, the brain gets rid of useless information by “cutting down” the synapses where the information is held. This “brain dump” allows us to learn new, important stuff – or re-learn useless junk (it’s really up to you what you choose to learn and store).

  1. You grow up

If someone asks you, “When will you grow up?” You’re not snarky if you reply, “When I go to sleep.” See, your vertebra rehydrates during a long period of rest, when the body isn’t putting pressure on them by standing. So, you do, in fact, “grow up.” Okay, so maybe you’re being a bit snarky. What of it?!

  1. You may get frisky

Yeah, apparently there is a condition called sexsomnia – and, apparently, it isn’t all that uncommon. In a study conducted by the researchers from the University Health Network in Toronto, eight percent of people surveyed at a sleep disorders center report getting frisky while dozing.

“Was it good for you?” (Okay, that’s enough.)

  1. You may have the same dreams or nightmares

If you have dreams that all revolve around the same theme – a phenomenon known as recurring dreams – you may be experiencing an unusual amount of stress. Recurring nightmares are more severe and are often triggered by anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

11 People Who Beat Addiction And Changed Their Life Completely

Addiction can affect anyone at any point in their life, regardless of their income, race, gender, or social status. It can start quite innocently at first, with a few drinks here and there. However, stressful life events coupled with mental illnesses can transform a casual habit into a full blown addiction. Other factors such as genetics and environment can affect one’s probability of becoming addicted to drugs or alcohol. Addiction affects millions of people worldwide, and not all of them overcome it, unfortunately. However, we want to show you some people who completely transformed their lives by beating their addiction, and the before and after photos prove just how drastically their lives have changed.

Here are 12 people who overcame their addiction and started a more positive life:

11 Diseases That Will (Probably) Be Cured in Your Lifetime

Most diseases, regardless of how terrifying they appear, are eventually neutralized. Consider smallpox as an example.

The history of smallpox is startling. During the lifetime of Edward Jenner, the physician and scientist who would eventually develop the smallpox vaccine, the disease killed about 10 percent of the population. When the disease spread to densely populated areas, the number was closer to 20 percent. During the 20th century alone, smallpox killed upwards of 500 million people.

Fast-forward to today, and “there is no evidence” of smallpox anywhere in the world, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Medical history brims with stories of once-ubiquitous deadly diseases being eradicated.  Diphtheria, pneumonia, and cholera, three of the most frequent causes of death during the late 19th and into the 20th century, are other examples.

While medical doctors and other scientists cannot guarantee that the following 11 diseases will be eliminated, there are promising signs that humans are on the cusp of doing just that. Without further ado …

…here are 11 diseases that may be cured in our lifetime:

  1. HIV/AIDS

HIV is a highly individualistic condition in the sense that people respond very differently to treatment. That said, researchers believe that advanced HIV will produce a replicable, standardized cure. A drug called ABX464, manufactured by the French company Abivax, is the first pharmaceutical to successfully target and reduce HIV at the source.

  1. Alzheimer’s Disease

In a groundbreaking study, researchers from the University of California, San Francisco were able to “correct … and erase” the harmful effects caused by a gene known to contribute Alzheimer’s. The gene, “APOE4,” was found to increase the production of amyloid beta – the buildup of which can cause the onset of dementia.

  1. Breast Cancer

It is well known that early stage breast cancer is curable in most women. Targeted therapies are demonstrating effectiveness in the later stages as well. Researchers are also progressing in their efforts to help predict which patients are at higher risk of metastatic disease.

  1. Leukemia

Recently, the FDA approved a new variation of a drug known to accelerate recovery for blood cancer patients. Clinical trials have shown that this new formulation may cause cancer remission in half of the patients with certain leukemia variations.

  1. Colon Cancer

Speaking of pharmaceutical breakthroughs, the FDA believes it has found one for colorectal (colon) cancer as well. Two drugs, Yervoy and Opdivo, may help patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Opdivo (generic name, nivolumab) serves as a “first line treatment” for many inoperable skin cancers as well.

  1. Lung Cancer

Statistics show five years as the survival rate for lung cancer. However, surgeons are confident that most cases of early lung cancer are operable. Therefore, those with stage 1, stage 2, or even stage 3 lung cancers may have great chances. Given the progress in surgical science, it is entirely possible that early-stage cancers of the lung can be eliminated in our lifetime.

  1. Childhood Epilepsy

Advocates and critics lock horns on this one. Medical marijuana may indeed provide the most natural, effective treatment for some kids with childhood epilepsy. Most unfortunately, a moral stigma still surrounds the use of cannabis – even when said treatment has proven remarkably effective.

  1. Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multi-organ disease that causes complications of the intestines, kidneys, liver, and pancreas; culminating in lung infections which progressively limit the ability to breathe. In August, two research teams reported finding a rare cell in the human respiratory system. Known as the “CFTR” gene, its cells may be the catalyst for the genetic disorder. The location of this gene could pave the way for new methods of therapy.

  1. Stroke

While there is no known cure for stroke, a procedure that effectively dissolves blood clots is probably the next best thing. Besides preventing stroke onset, a tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) may also limit any neurological damage should a stroke occur.

  1. Heart Disease

While the word “cure” may or may not apply to diagnosable heart disease, numerous advances in medicine have made the condition all but entirely preventable. Studies show that a combination of lifestyle changes, natural herbs, and whole foods can normalize high blood pressure (hypertension) and an imbalance in “good” and “bad” cholesterol!

  1. Ovarian Cancer

As it stands, aggressive chemotherapy serves as the “recommended” treatment for post-operative ovarian cancer. Given that the success rates for chemotherapy are dismal, researchers are looking intently for any possible alternatives. It turns out that their collective efforts are beginning to reap dividends. Per a study published in the journal Cell Metabolism, researchers were able to target cancer cell “signaling pathways” that allow the proliferation of cancer cells within the ovaries. For the first time, scientists may be able to recommend a safer, healthier, more effective treatment alternative than chemotherapy and side-effect-laden drugs.

11 Health Benefits of Chia + How to Use Them

benefits of chia seeds

1. Powerful Antioxidant

Antioxidants work by reducing the effect of harmful free radicals on cells in the body. Found in blueberries, green vegetables, and dark chocolate, antioxidants like Vitamin C are a vital part of a healthy diet. In 2014, a Mexican study found that these incredible seeds have double the antioxidant power than scientists previously thought.

2. Better Digestion

These seeds are loaded with soluble fiber, which expands in your stomach to help you feel more full and satisfied. This can combat overeating. Also, the additional fiber in these seeds will make your digestive system run more efficiently. You will find you have less constipation and stomach upset. The fiber in these seeds is a prebiotic that helps to feed your beneficial gut bacteria.

3. Reduce Inflammation

These powerful seeds have the ability to reduce inflammation in the body. Since they are so rich in fiber and antioxidants, they calm the body and can protect against conditions caused by inflammation, such as heart disease.

4. Fight Diabetes and Insulin Resistance

These seeds have the ability to balance blood sugar in the body since they are packed with fiber and alpha-linoleic acids, otherwise known as Omega-3s. An animal study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that the effects of a high-sugar diet were lessened when the animals were fed chia seeds.

5. Plant-Based Protein

When people are searching for ways to reduce their meat consumption, they can take advantage of plant-based proteins. These seeds are rich in protein, about 14% by weight. Eating a high-protein diet is great for weight loss since protein makes people feel more satisfied and lowers their appetite.

6. Weight Loss

One of the greatest benefits of chia seeds is that they can help with healthy weight loss. Since the soluble fiber expands in liquid, they help to fill your stomach and make you feel fuller longer. That curbs excess snacking and cravings for high-carb foods. The protein in these seeds also causes a feeling of fullness.

7. Bone Health

High in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and protein, these seeds help build healthy bones. With 18% of the daily RDA of calcium in just one ounce, it’s easy to add more calcium to your diet using these seeds. Bone health is crucial for growth in young people and also for the prevention of osteoporosis, or brittle bones, in the elderly. Everyone should make sure they are getting the recommended amount of calcium each day.

8. Boost of Energy

A study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning found that these seeds give the body an extra energy boost equal to that of a sports drink without any of the unhealthy added sugars. Athletes frequently use these seeds for carbohydrate loading, a practice that helps the body store up energy for vigorous activity.

9. Oral Health

These seeds support a healthy mouth and healthy teeth. The calcium content is great for teeth, while the anti-inflammatory benefits could help with gum inflammation. These seeds are rich in zinc, which helps to protect against bad breath.

10. Healthy Skin

Eating these seeds is great for your skin. The antioxidants contained in these seeds combat oxidative damage to your skin cells. This could help prevent premature aging and protect your skin against free radicals.

Since these seeds are powered by alpha-linoleic acid, (ALA) one of the Omega-3 fatty acids, they may have an effect on the growth of cancer cells. Scientists studied the effects of ALA on cancer cells and found that they stopped the growth of these cells without damaging the healthy cells around them. This is a promising study and more research is being conducted.

Final Thoughts

These seeds can benefit everything from your skin to your heart. They are great for weight loss. The ALA fatty acids in these seeds may even fight cancer. Discover all of the awesome uses for these miracle seeds in your diet and bring their incredible benefits home every day.

8 Proven Ways To Deal With A Psychopath At Work

You’ve probably known a co-worker or boss at a job who just gave you the creeps. Maybe they made you feel like you had done something wrong when really it was them who had done something they shouldn’t have. Or maybe you know someone who treats their subordinates poorly, but they’re really slick with the people above them. You might have been angry or felt uncomfortable, but you might not have actually called them a psychopath. These people aren’t just lurking down dark alleys waiting to murder you. There are plenty in corporate America.

There are several characteristics that make people psychopaths. According to Amy Morin in Forbes, there are certain psychopath traits such as “dishonesty, exploitation, arrogance, low remorse, minimizing self-blame, callousness, and shallow affect.” Those psychopaths who are successful in the workplace have more self-control, and this is what keeps them out of jail. Psychopaths who end up in jail lack the ability to plan, but the successful psychopaths are able to curb impulses that would land them in serious trouble, or they can at least plan enough to not get caught.

If you work with someone who you think might be a psychopath, you might wonder what you can do to survive their manipulative or demeaning behavior. Psychopaths aren’t the type of people that you want to tangle with if you can avoid it. They, along with other toxic people, can drain you of your energy and self-worth. These kinds of toxic people can too. But, if you can’t avoid them, there are a few things that you can do. According to Amy Morin at Inc., you should control your emotions, don’t be intimidated, communicate by email, don’t listen to their stories, turn the conversation to them, and get away from them if possible.

Here’s how to deal with a psychopath at work:

psychopathic traits

Control Emotions

Morin says that you should stay calm and don’t show your emotions. When you show your emotions, you give them leverage over you. By staying calm, not only are you not letting them control you, but you also aren’t giving away your weak spots.

Don’t Be Intimidated

For most morally sane people, not being intimidated when someone is yelling or doing other things in the effort to intimidate you doesn’t sit well. But, you need to be very assertive with people who are trying to scare you. It’s important to show the psychopath that his demeanor won’t get to you. Morin also advises to report incidents to Human Resources.

Don’t Listen to Stories

Psychopaths often tell stories to make themselves bigger and better than what they are. If you want to avoid their manipulative ways, make sure that you take the stories with a grain of salt. They can also sometimes tell stories that make them look like the victim when something goes wrong. If you buy into their stories, you might find yourself feeling bad for them, and you might end up doing things for them that you wouldn’t normally do that can even put you in danger, or at least in an uncomfortable position.

Make the Conversation About Them

It’s not wise to directly confront a psychopath, but you can ask them how they’re doing when they have an outburst or try to blame someone else. Make it sound like concern rather than an accusation.

Use Online Communication

Morin tells us that psychopaths are best at negotiating face to face. They, however, are not nearly as adept at doing it over an email. Try to make as much communication over email versus in person so that you aren’t giving them the opportunity to manipulate your feelings.

Stay Away, If Possible

If you have a boss or colleague who has psychopath traits, stay away as much as possible. And, if it’s really that bad and you’re able to do so, consider quitting before it takes a toll on your health.

Take Care of Your Mental Health

If you can’t get away, you might find that your mental health begins to suffer. Anxiety and depression are common symptoms of people who are dealing with a psychopathic boss or co-worker. Make some extra time in your personal life to be aware and take extra steps to boost your immunity.

Having a psychopathic boss or co-worker can take a major toll on your mental health and career, but if you want to minimize the effects, take charge of what you can. Also, don’t internalize the behavior and messages. Know that you’re not the problem, and make sure that you document any serious offenses. While it’s not always effective to try to go above the head of a psychopath, there’s strength in numbers. And, if you’re feeling manipulated or degraded, there’s a good chance that some of your other co-workers are, too. Getting a read on how other people feel can give you and the other victims an opportunity to expose the psychopath to their superiors.

11 Signs Your Thyroid Is Causing Health Problems

If you’re not familiar with hypothyroidism, it is a medical condition whereby the thyroid gland loses its ability to produce the requisite amount of hormones that the body needs to properly function and, in some cases, produces far too much. Although men and women can both be diagnosed with the disease, older women, especially those over 65 are more likely to be diagnosed.

So what symptoms are indicative of hypothyroidism? Well, it’s important to note that during the early stages of the disease patients are often asymptomatic; it’s not until the disease has significantly progressed that patients begin to notice symptoms including

  • Joint pain
  • Weight gain
  • Heart disease
  • Infertility
  • Constipation
  • Muscle fatigue
  • Thinning hair

Obviously, this is not an all-encompassing enumeration of symptoms, but it is a list of some of the more common issues that those with hypothyroidism may face. In this article, we will detail the etiology of the disease, treatments that are available, and the importance of seeking prompt medical treatment.

IS HYPOTHYROIDISM CAUSING YOU HEALTH PROBLEMS?

Because hypothyroidism can mimic different health problems, you should consult with a physician if you are experiencing any of the previously mentioned symptoms. Your physician will likely perform a battery of test to rule out other diseases that may be contributing to your illness, before starting a treatment regimen.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SEEKING MEDICAL TREATMENT

Not surprisingly, there is a subset of society that has an aversion to doctors and hospitals, and as a result, they often forgo seeking much-needed medical attention. It’s important that you don’t let this fear keep you from getting the medical treatment you need for a problematic thyroid gland. The longer you go without being treated, the worse your symptoms will become, often manifesting into myxedema, an advanced stage of hypothyroidism. If the disease progresses to this point, you may develop an enlarged thyroid (also known as a goiter). Additionally, you may find that your cognitive abilities have been impacted, and you may develop low blood pressure. Myxedema can be life-threatening if you don’t seek medical care.

OVERACTIVE HYPOTHYROIDISM

Having detailed the symptoms and health concerns that come with an underactive thyroid, let’s take a moment to examine what an overactive thyroid entails. Unlike an underactive thyroid that doesn’t produce enough of the body’s needed hormones, an overactive one produces too much. This form of hypothyroidism can contribute to a hypermetabolic state, causing extreme weight loss. Additionally, those who have been diagnosed may exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Insomnia
  • Nervousness
  • Anxiety
  • Heat sensitivity
  • Heart palpitations

Again, these symptoms are not listed in their entirety; however, they are some of the more common problems affecting those with hypothyroidism. It’s important that you seek medical treatment if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms as they may be indicative of hypothyroidism. This type of hypothyroidism it can be caused by a number of things, ranging from Graves’ disease to certain medications like amiodarone, for example. Therefore, it is critical to seek medical attention to identify the root cause of your illness.

The symptoms associated with overactive hypothyroidism is wide-ranging, but of the many effects that this condition can have on the body, impaired vision is easily one of the scariest. In fact, according to the National Health Service, one in every 20 to 30 cases involving overactive hypothyroidism has resulted in a patient’s vision loss. To that end, will detail a few of the eye problems that are, for a lack of a better term, part and parcel of overactive hypothyroidism including

  • Watering eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred vision
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Bulging eyes
  • Swollen or pulled back eyelids

thyroid

Once again, this is by no means a comprehensive list of things to look out for, but they are some of the primary eye problems that those with overactive hypothyroidism have experienced. Once a physician has confirmed that your eye problems are linked to hypothyroidism, you will then likely be referred to an ophthalmologist who will, in turn, prescribe prescription eye drops, steroid medications and, in extreme cases, recommend surgery as part of your thyroid treatment.

In summation, hypothyroidism is a condition that requires prompt medical attention in order to avoid a myriad of health problems. Obviously, we are not able to address every nuance of the disease in this article, and therefore, we encourage you to seek thyroid treatment if you experience any of the symptoms denoted throughout this article.

How to Use a Foam Roller to Relieve Lower Back Pain

Millions of Americans consider themselves healthy and active. They go on morning runs, lift weights, and make regular trips to the gym. Many of these Americans know what it takes to keep their bones and muscles as health as possible. They often have hydration, stretching, and cool down regimens to this effect. Pains and conditions that come up are treated with stretching and potentially medication. But not as many people think about the tissues that bind their muscles and bones together.

These tissues need to be treated carefully in the same way that individuals treat the other parts of their body when they are working out. Foam rollers are essential to help with this process. They can also help with lower back pain developed either during workouts or in the normal course of one’s day.

Purpose of a foam roller

The purpose of a foam roller is to release and relax the fascia throughout the body. Fascia is a term for the connective tissues and ligaments that help muscles function properly. These parts of the body can be just as important as muscles in some instances and can wear down like muscles do. The processes that wear down the body are particularly strong in the lower back area. Back muscles are some of the most sensitive in the body. They have to hold up the entire upper half of the body to a certain degree along with a number of organs.

As a result, the fascia in these areas is most susceptible to strain. Weakened or strained fascia can result in a considerable amount of lower back pain. Most common forms of working out and stretching only put stress on these parts of the body. Foam rollers are meant to help relieve tension held in these tissues and heal lower back pain. A foam roller is a stiff foam log that is often present at gyms or sold at sporting goods stores. The body rolling up against these foam logs helps to loosen the knots and taught sections of fascia throughout the targeted muscle groups. Long, lean stretches of these connective tissues in theory are healthier and have a reduced chance of leading to pain or sprains.

Best uses

The best use of a foam roller is as part of any stretching routine. Many individuals have a routine where they stretch numerous parts of their body both before and after working out. A foam roller can be used to stretch out numerous parts of the body that are used during the workout. An individual simply places pressure down and rolls their lower back against the roller while it is on the ground. Another common use is simply to heal lower back pain. Individuals roll at the area of their lower back pain on a regular basis and at the same time every day. They may then be more limber afterwards and have a more elastic lower back area. Even for individuals who are only using the foam roller for pain, stretching may be helpful in reducing overall lower back pain.

Limitations

There are few limitations to the usage of foam rollers. They can be used for several forms of stretching and at several points in a workout. These tools cannot be used for strength training or cardio workouts. They will not make an individual lift more weight by themselves and will not magically make their backs better for lifting. The foam roller is also not a substitute for other forms of stretching. Individuals should stretch their lower back muscles both before and after working out and should focus on all of the areas that may be injured at one point or another. Instead, foam rollers will help flexibility and endurance for the workouts that an individual will engage in.

Conclusion

Lower back pain is considered a part of life by many people. People may be energetic or sedentary and still have to suffer with this problem. However, a simple foam roller can at least help an individual manage his or her pain. Proper technique and regular use are essential to making sure the roller works. But with this combination, individuals can ensure that they will be as limber and pain-free as they can be through a form of exercise.
