Doctors Reveal the Causes and Symptoms of Fever Blisters

If you’ve ever been bothered by a painful and unsightly fever blister, you know that they pop out at the worst times. Maybe it happens prior to school pictures, an important job interview, or before your wedding. They can appear anywhere on your face and can last up to 14 days.

While they will go away, they can still reappear anytime in your life because there’s no cure. However, some natural remedies and medications can ease the symptoms and speed up the healing process. It’s best to treat them in the early stage.

What is a Fever Blister?

Fever blisters are often called cold sores because they can accompany a fever or a bad cold, and they usually appear on the seam of the lip or around your face. Like the common cold, fever blisters are caused by a virus. These sores are caused by the herpes simplex type 1 virus or HSV1.

Although HSV1 is not considered a sexually transmitted disease like HSV2, it can also cause fever blisters in the genital area. Likewise, HSV2 can produce sores on your lips and your face.

Both herpes simplex viruses are highly contagious, whether the sores have appeared or not. You can get fever blisters by coming in contact with someone who has the virus. HSV1 is usually passed on by kissing, eating from the same plate, or sharing cosmetics.

Are Cold Sores and Canker Sores the Same?

Cold sores and canker sores are both ugly and painful, but they aren’t the same condition. Canker sores are flat, pale lesions surrounded by inflammation that usually occurs in the mouth, on your tongue, or the insides of your cheeks. These are often caused by injury or by eating spicy food that burns the inside of your mouth.

The word is still out on whether canker sores are viral and contagious like cold sores. Research shows that they also may be related to the immune system, and they can reoccur anytime. Although canker sores usually heal quicker than cold sores do, there remains no cure for either condition.

Signs and Symptoms of a Cold Sore

When you’ve had cold sore outbreaks in the past, you already know the signs of recurrence. Here are the common signs and symptoms:

  • Tingling or burning sensations in the seam of your lips or on your face. This usually happens a few days before the blister appears. When you notice this sign, start treatment as soon as possible.
  • A small inflamed blister forms that are red and full of fluid. Sometimes, the virus will cause a cluster of painful and tender blisters. You can also have more than one sore develop.
  • These painful sores will usually be present for up to 14 days. Until they burst and scab over, they will be contagious. If you have contact with the HSV1 virus, it may take up to 20 days for the first cold sore to appear.

Other Symptoms to Notice

In addition to the outbreak of sores on your mouth or face, you may notice some of these symptoms when you’ve contracted HSV1:

  • Low-grade fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Aching muscles
  • Lack of energy

Although rare, some people can develop symptoms in their eyes during an outbreak of herpes simplex 1, especially children. Seek medical attention immediately if you notice any eye problems. If the infection isn’t treated immediately, it could lead to permanent loss of your vision.

Five Stages of a Cold Sore

It often seems like a cold sore can develop overnight and plague you for days. Most cold sores go through five stages before they disappear. Again, the best time to treat them is to notice the initial signs in the first stage.

First stage: You will usually feel tingling, irritation, and itching around your mouth or other areas of your face about one day before you see blisters appear.

Second stage: Small inflamed blisters filled with fluid erupt on the seam of your lips or your face. They burn and itch profusely.

Third stage: The blister or cluster of blisters burst and ooze fluid, then turn into sores that are painful and tender to the touch.

Fourth stage: As the sores dry over a few days, they will seal over with a cracking scab that continues to itch, burn, and occasionally bleed.

Fifth stage: The crusty scab finally peels away, and the cold sore is healed. Unless you’ve picked at the scab and caused further inflammation, cold sores rarely leave scars.

Uncommon Cold Sore Complications

Although complications from cold sores rarely happen, they can strike children or people with compromised immune systems from the disease. If you or a loved one has a cold sore outbreak and notice any of these symptoms, seek medical attention right away:

  • Running a high fever or one that persists
  • Breathing or swallowing difficulties
  • Eyes that are irritated and red, with or without discharge

Men and women of any age can catch the HSV1 at any time and develop cold sores. Michelle invited her mom into an online group of women who also wanted to lose weight and get healthier. There, they could share valuable tips with each other and offer support and encouragement. Taking inspiration and advice from Michelle and the other women, Joan immediately made a 180 with her lifestyle. She renewed her gym membership, bought a food scale, and purchased an iPhone to use macro counting apps.

“It was incredibly hard work, let me tell you, and there were many days where I was in tears over technology, but I never threw in the towel.  However, I stuck to my guns and never gave up. My motto was, ‘I don’t mind if my changes are slow. I am going to go at my own pace, and this time the changes are going to last the rest of my life.’ I really meant it,” Joan said on her website.

Joan says she’s lost around 60 pounds so far, most of which came off during the first six months. She uses an app called Macros to track her food intake, and her daughter sends her workouts through a fitness app. In addition to altering her food and workout habits, Joan says she had to change her mindset as well. She started using the app Headspace over a year ago, crediting it for teaching her to stay calm and focused.

How Does Joan Stick to the Plan?

While it was hard at first, Joan said the support of the online group helped tremendously with sticking to her goals. She also had to change her mindset and relationship with food, eating five meals per day to power her through the workouts. According to her Instagram, Joan eats balanced meals of around 1500 calories per day. She eats about 150g of carbs and protein per day, and 40g of fat.

Joan also treats herself to a few cheat meals per month, where she doesn’t track anything or worry about calories. She doesn’t avoid any food groups and eats healthy most of the time, but says she loves Nutella. (Then again, don’t we all have that one food we can’t resist sometimes?) Joan drinks around 3 liters of water per day and doesn’t take any performance drugs or steroids.

She lost 45 pounds during the first year of her fitness transformation, ten the next year, and ten more the following year. Her daughter Michelle believes she will lose around five more this year just from continuing her workout regimen. Joan’s workouts consist of 5 days of weight training and 3-7 days of cardio. Weight training sessions last around 90 minutes, including warm-ups and cool-downs, and cardio can last from 15-45 minutes, depending on her goals.

While this may seem intense, Joan says if you want to lose weight, you have to work hard at it. “If you are looking for a change, I can tell you that it is not an easy journey, but it is well worth it.  I hope that my story gives you the confidence that you can change too. If I can do it, you can do it,” she says.

Joan says that in the online group, they had to share collages comparing pictures of their starting and current weight. She said it helped her and the other women stay motivated and know they were on the right track. As the months went by, Joan could tell that they all had made progress. The weight and inches started to melt away, and Joan’s confidence in the gym steadily increased.

The study published in September of 2020, and scientists note the following about the massive clean-up effort that will be required:

Also, plastic is used in tissue engineering, intravenous bags, sterile packaging, and disposable syringes.

But not all uses of plastics are beneficial or sustainable.  Studies show that widespread use of plastics exposes the human body to ingredients in the plastic. Everyone uses plastic during their lifetime, especially Bisphenol A (BPA),  a chemical used to make food containers and hygiene items. A Canadian research team found BPA in the urine 95% of the adults tested. Di (2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) used to make plastic pliable, is another concerning chemical found in plastics. Exposure to both these chemicals can cause health issues, including

  • Reproduction problems
  • Early sexual maturation problems
  • A decrease in male fertility
  • Promote aggressive behaviors
  • Increased insulin resistance
  • Obesity

BPA is used less, and it was, but DEHP is still used in some plastic products, including the following items:

How do humans dispose of plastics right now?

Currently, there are four primary ways that humans dispose of plastics.

1 – Landfills

Landfills are enormous and ugly. The biggest negative of landfills is that they contain toxins and leachate, which is wastewater filled with toxins and also greenhouse gases. These are healthy for the environment and groundwater.

2 – Incineration

This can eliminate some plastic, but it does release harmful gases into the air.

3 – Recycling

Recycling is a great option. Many of the recycled plastics can be reused. But collecting and sorting of recycled plastic waste isn’t always handled correctly by waste companies or companies. A great start is by trying some Good Reclaimed Furniture ideas.

4 – Biodegrading

A growing number of plastics are biodegradable. This is an excellent way to reduce plastic pollution and waste, but some biodegradable plastics contain contaminates.

What can you do to avoid plastic pollution?

1 – Limit your one-time use of plastic.

Single-use plastics like plastic coffee cups, water bottles, plastic straws, or disposable plastic utensils can be replaced with items made out of other materials. Use a porcelain coffee cup, metal utensils, bamboo straws, or metal water bottles. Try to avoid plastic take-out containers whenever possible or ask if your food could be placed in a paper container.

2 – Pack your kids’ lunch in a reusable container.

Reusable, washable containers are more available than they used to be, so it’s easier to find an answer that works well for both you and your family.

3 – Recycle when possible.

Today, approximately 90% of all plastic doesn’t get recycled. Place a recycle bin inside and outside your home for plastic and paper. If your trash company doesn’t pick up recycled materials, take your recycled items to a recycling center in your area.

4 – Replace plastic grocery bags with string bags or reusable, washable bags.

Reuse packaging materials you receive. Stuff boxes you’re mailing with your recycled plastic for cushioning items. If you will be sending or shipping out paper documents, you may use paper cores instead of plastic packaging materials.

5 – Many beauty products contain tiny plastic microbeads for exfoliating your face or body.

Avoid using these products since these beads end up in the steams where they get eaten by fish and other animals. In many cases, they’re fatal to these animals.

6 – Cook at home.

This may seem like such an insignificant point, but cooking at home instead of eating out is one step towards reducing plastic pollution. The more often you cook meals at home, the less plastic gets used in restaurants and the fewer plastic takeaway bags you’ll use over a lifetime.

7 – Buying in larger quantities.

Instead of buying small yogurt cups, purchase a big container of yogurt. Buy big bags of chips instead of the tiny little bags. If you put chips in your child’s lunch box, store them in paper bags or small reusable containers. Prepping foods in this manner will help you eat healthier plus help the environment.

8 – Help out!

If your community has a plastic waste clean up in the area, parks, rivers, or creeks, jump in and help. Pick up plastic waste whenever you notice it when you’re out for a walk. If you’re at the beach, pick up plastic bottles or bags. You never know, you may save the life of a turtle or bird.

9 – Stop decorating with balloons

Avoid using balloons outdoors, especially mylar balloons, since they are made of plastic. Animals could eat pieces of the balloon and get sick or even die.

10 – Avoid buying synthetic clothing.

Believe it or not, some of your clothes have tiny bits of plastic in them. Researchers say that 1/3 of the plastic pollution in our oceans comes from the laundry. This plastic pollution occurs as synthetic fabrics shed bits into the water and out with the rinse water.

11 – Food wrap alternatives to plastic

Plastic is used a lot in your kitchen. Instead of wrapping your foods in plastic or putting them in little plastic baggies, try these food wrap alternatives.

Beeswax wrap

Beeswax wrap is growing in popularity. These reusable wraps are made with cotton dipped in beeswax. The beeswax wraps mold to the shape of the things you want to cover, like sandwiches.

Glass jars

Glass jars are excellent food storage containers. Reuse the pickle jars, olive jars, or mason jars. Wash and use over and over again. Also, the metal lids contain a layer of plastic to create a seal and thus prevent oxidation.  Reuse your jars whenever it is possible, and be sure to recycle when it’s time to part ways!

 Cloth wrap

Cloth wraps with elastic edges are great for covering bowls. You might also use a clean piece of cheesecloth and lay over the top of a bowl, then use a rubber band or twine around the edge to fit it tightly over the top of the bowl.
