UCLA Researchers Find How Our Brains Track Our Location

A recent UCLA study reveals how our brains navigate places, know our precise location, and also monitor others around us.

Published Dec. 23, 2020, in the journal Nature, these findings imply that our brains generate a code to mark others’ location relative to ours.

“We studied how our brain reacts when we navigate a physical space — first alone and then with others,” said senior author Nanthia Suthana, the Ruth and Raymond Stotter Chair in Neurosurgery. She’s also an assistant professor of neurosurgery and psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

“Our results imply that our brains create a universal signature to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes,” added Suthana, whose laboratory researchers how the brain forms and processes memories.

In previous research, Suthana and her colleagues studied epilepsy patients who’d had surgically implanted electrodes in their brains to control seizures. The electrodes had been placed in the medial temporal lobe, the area of the brain that controls memory and regulates navigation. It works similarly to a GPS device.

“Earlier studies have shown that low-frequency brain waves by neurons in the medial temporal lobe help rodents keep track of where they are as they navigate a new place,” said first author Matthias Stangl, a postdoctoral scholar in Suthana’s lab. “We wanted to investigate this idea in people — and test whether they could also monitor others near them — but were hampered by existing technology.”

Research that showed how our brains know our location

pop memeSuthana’s team had been awarded $3.3 million from the National Institutes of Health’s BRAIN Initiative. Using these funds, the team created a backpack that held a computer, and this connected wirelessly to brain electrodes. This device allowed the team to analyze volunteers as they moved around instead of lying still in a brain scanner.

For the research, each patient wore a backpack and explored an empty room. The team instructed them to locate a hidden spot and remember it in subsequent searches. While volunteers explored the room, the backpack recorded their eye movements, brain waves, and location in real-time.

As they walked around the room, their brain waves moved in a particular pattern. This suggested to researchers that each person’s brain had mapped out the room’s walls and other features. The patients’ brain waves flowed similarly when they sat in a corner of the room and observed someone walking to the hidden location.

This observation suggests that our brain waves produce the same patterns to track our location and others’.

Why this matters

“Everyday activities require us to navigate around other people in the same place constantly,” said Suthana, who is also an assistant professor of psychology at UCLA’s College of Letters and Science and of bioengineering at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering. “Consider choosing the shortest airport security line, searching for a space in a crowded parking lot, or avoiding bumping into someone on the dance floor.”

Another finding from the study revealed that our brains map our location differently depending on where our attention goes. For example, patients’ brain waves flowed the strongest when they searched for the hidden location or observed someone approaching it. However, when they just explored the empty room, their brain waves were weaker.

“Our results support the idea that, under certain mental states, this pattern of brain waves may help us recognize boundaries,” said Stangl. “In this case, it was when people were focused on a goal and hunting for something.”

In the future, they want to focus on how people’s brain waves react in more complex social situations. The team says they’ve granted other researchers access to the backpack so they can study more about the brain and brain disorders.

Other studies about how our brains know our location

About six years ago, three researchers found that different types of neurons mapped our location, helping us navigate it. They earned a Nobel Prize in Medicine for this discovery. Recent studies have found a new area of the brain related to this ‘GPS,’ which doesn’t work correctly in those with Alzheimer’s. Science also found that men and women orient themselves to their location in different ways.

In the late 1960s, neuroscientist John O’Keefe experimented on rodents to discover how our brains know our location. In the study, he observed signals from the hippocampus in rats moving around a room. When he analyzed the results, he found that certain neurons called place cells became activated when the animal realized its location.

In 1971, O’Keefe concluded that the hippocampus generated many different maps due to the place cells’ activity. This finding resulted in him earning the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 2014. He shared this discovery with the married Norwegian scientists May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser.

In 2005, the couple found another part of the brain’s GPS, a type of neuron called a grid cell. This generates a coordinate system that tells the brain our exact location and helps with spatial navigation. The grid cells form circuits with the neurons in the hippocampus and others in the entorhinal cortex. Altogether, this forms our integral positioning system or the brain’s GPS.

locationFinal thoughts: many studies have found that neurons help us map our location

Prior studies and the recent one done by Suthana’s team have discovered how our brains map our location. Not only do our brain waves move in a distinct pattern when we orient ourselves to a location, but certain neurons become activated. Scientists have found that our brains produce similar patterns when we track our location and others’. They also discovered that our brains react differently in more complex situations.

Because these findings could help with future research on brain disorders, the team wants to continue their studies. This research could help scientists better understand how different parts of the brain react in various mental states. It may also help with treatments and therapies for different types of disorders.

Researchers Reveal The Best Essential Oils to Fight Acne

Zits. Pimples. Bumps. Whatever you call it, acne is embarrassing. You may have tried cleansers, creams, and prescription medications without success. But there’s still hope because researchers say essential oils can fight acne better than some antibiotics.

What is acne?

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles get clogged with oils and dead skin cells. It causes blackheads and pus-filled pimples, and reddish tender bumpy areas on your face. Studies show it’s the 2nd most common skin disease in the world. It affects both men and women, starting in adolescence to young adults up to 30 years old. If it’s severe enough, acne can cause depression and feelings of social isolation.

fight acneAlthough there are many over-the-counter treatments, doctors typically prescribe antibiotics for acne. Unfortunately, the two major types of acne bacteria, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acne, are antibiotic-resistant.

Essential oils to fight acne

Since antibiotics are less effective in treating acne, essential oils have become a popular, effective alternative treatment for acne. Essential oils are extracted from certain parts of a plant using pressure or steam to get the plant’s natural essence. They’re made into food flavorings, medicines, aromatherapy, and perfumes.

One study on essential oils that may fight acne

Due to a growing problem of antibiotic resistance in acne treatment, researchers wanted to find something that could kill acne and stop its growth. They conducted a study to find an essential oil formula that could best fight acne and stop its growth. They decided to use several essential oils known for their anti-bacterial properties. The most effective antimicrobial essential oil observed in this study included:

  • Tea tree oil
  • Lemongrass
  • Oregano oil
  • Thyme oil

The test results showed three essential oils, tea tree, thyme, and oregano oils, were somewhat effective against both Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. At the end of this study, oregano and thyme oil showed the strongest antibacterial ability against acne, with tree oil having some moderate effects. Oregano oil was the most effective essential oil to reduce the number of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes in only four hours after applying it. So, oregano oil beat out the other essential oils for its anti-acne ability to quickly stop acne’s bacterial growth.

Acne-fighting recipes

It’s no secret that doctors are beginning to understand the significance of essential oils for medical purposes. Essential oils are a safe and effective way to fight a variety of health problems. Besides oregano oil, there are other well-known acne-fighting essential oils.

Frankincense acne- fighting recipe

Frankincense essential oil is known for its astringent properties. It’s quick to dry out pimples, but because it can be too drying to your skin, you should mix it with a carrier oil. A carrier oil is usually taken from nuts or seeds that moisturize and keep the essential oil from evaporating too quickly.

Ingredients:

  • Frankincense essential oil-12 drops
  • Vitamin E oil-6-10 drops.
  • Jojoba oil- 4Tablespoons
  • Lemon oil-5 drops
  • Tea tree oil-5 drops

Directions:

Mix the oils and store in a dark bottle. Use a dropper to put several drops of the oil on your face twice a day.

pop memeOregano oil acne fighting recipe

It’s known for its ability to get rid of acne, but oregano oil can be drying and even cause burns if not diluted properly. A good rule of thumb is 1% to 2% of oregano oil to carrier oil.

Ingredients:

  • Oregano-2 drops
  • Jojoba oil-3 drops
  • Vitamin E oil-3 drops.

Directions:

Apply to the problem area of your skin once a day.

What if you have oily skin?

Some people with oily skin don’t like to use carrier oils. If this is you, you can also use water to dilute the oregano oil or whatever essential oil you choose. Add a few drops of oregano oil to ¼ to ½ glass of water. Using a cotton ball, dab the mixture on the problem areas of your face.

How do you choose good quality essential oils?

Distilled from plants, essential oils have chemical compounds from plants. It can take hundreds to thousands of flowers to process one bottle of real essential oil. There are so many brands of essential oils. How do you know you’re getting a real quality essential oil or a fake imitation?

Here are several key things to look for when purchasing an essential oil.

  • Avoid cheap fragrance oils: These oils are synthetically made. They don’t have natural plant compounds. They’re less expensive than essential oils because they’re basically artificially made.
  • Read the label: Essential oils should have the word “pure oil” written on the label. The label will also have the Latin name for the plant it’s derived from. Essential oils usually smell very potent. If you can smell any alcohol or it smells more like a kitchen cleaner, it’s probably not real. Also, if you see the words “Therapeutic grade” on the bottle of oil, it’s probably fake. This isn’t a term used by the FDA or other agencies. It’s a made-up term to try to fool you into thinking the oil is pure.
  • Cost: Even though you always want a good deal, when it comes to buying essential oils, don’t skimp. It’s expensive to process essential oils. If the oil is low cost, good chance, it’s also low quality.

History of essential oils

The ancient Egyptians first used essential oils. They cultivated plants for oils, using them for religious ceremonies, cosmetics, and medicine.

The Egyptians used an extraction process to distill the plant essence and animal fat as a carrier oil. The pots they used for distillation purposes have been dug and recorded as far back as 3500 BC.

During that same time period, India and China were also using herbs and plants for medicine. The Romans and Greeks quickly adopted essential oils.

The Greeks were known to use many essential oils, including:

  • Thyme
  • Saffron
  • Marjoram
  • Cumin
  • Peppermint

Hippocrates probably used these essential oils to treat his patients. Essential oils were also used in aromatic baths and for massage. The use of essential oils dropped off during the dark ages, but with the dawning of the Renaissance, the use of aromatherapy returned. Essential oils began to be used once again for medicine. During the time period, a doctor named Paracelsus reported he’d found a plant extract that could cure leprosy, very infectious disease at that time. It’s unknown if he really did cure this disease, but his experimentation with plants is legendary.

The word “aromatherapy” was invented by a French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse. He became a believer in natural healing with plants and herbs when he burnt his hand during an experiment and treated it with the only thing he had nearby: a lavender oil bottle.  The oil helped reduce the pain and healed his hand without scarring. He prescribed essential oils to his patients, finding that even small amounts could be absorbed well. During World War II, doctors used lavender oils for treating burned soldiers.

In the late 1970s and 80s, natural medicine and essential oils became popular again. Many people today want to do away with harmful chemicals that affect the environment, so they’re turning to essential oils. Using essential oils taken from plants has grown in popularity in the last decade, with many reputable essential oil companies cropping up.

Man Adopts Three-legged Dog and Became Inspired Himself

When Kyle went through a rough patch in his life, he thought adopting a three-legged dog would give him a sense of purpose again.

He went to the local shelter, and immediately, a three-legged lab stood out to him. The employees told him he’d have his hands full, but he felt a strange connection to the dog right away.

But he couldn’t go back home without the tiny lab puppy who so badly needed someone to adopt him.

“When Tre and I met, I was going through a very difficult time in my life, and I felt like I needed something to care about,” Kyle said. “I came across this little 3-month-old Black Lab who had just had his leg amputated. They told me it would be a lot of work, you know, he was still getting used to walking around on three legs.”

It was puppy love at first sight for Kyle.

But as soon as he saw Tre, he thought, “This dog is exactly what I need in my life right now!”

When Kyle brought him home, he soon realized he’d have to make some adjustments. The three-legged dog had a hard time walking on his slippery tile floor, so Kyle got an idea. He brought in a bunch of yoga mats, rugs, and carpets to make it easier for him.

“I still had to help him learn how to stand up, learn how to balance. We gradually built up the strength in his back leg so that he could walk around on his own.”

After about three months, though, Tre began to show signs of pain in his back leg. He didn’t want to put weight on it, and cried whenever he walked. Kyle immediately took him to the vet where they found out Tre had something called avascular necrosis. This condition occurs when the blood flow doesn’t reach the bone, which causes the bone to disintegrate.

Sadly, the vet didn’t know if Tre would ever walk again. But, after having another surgery, Tre recovered and built up his strength once again. His determination and bravery greatly inspired Kyle, because he got to watch him rise above any challenge he faced.

“He’s really an inspiration, you know, there’s something special that happens when you see an innocent little puppy who, in his first 6 months of life, had two major surgeries,” Kyle said. “He lost one leg, and he almost lost another leg.”

After his surgery, Kyle carried Tre around for six to eight weeks, although he stayed in the house most of that time. To get him out a bit, Kyle would put him in his Jeep and drive him slowly around the neighborhood at night. Kyle said he looked forward to the ride every single day.

A happy recovery for the three-legged dog, Tre

Three months after his surgery, Tre finally went for a walk around the whole neighborhood without sitting down even once. As Kyle sat down next to him, he said he cried his eyes out because he felt so proud of his little puppy.

“Now he walks around, runs around the yard, chases squirrels and rabbits; there’s really nothing that he can’t do,” Kyle said. Seeing Tre overcome obstacles inspires Kyle to take on challenges in his own life.

“I had always had this dream of competing on American Ninja Warrior, but after seeing him go through what he went through, I got a new boost of confidence. I said, ‘You know what?’ I’m gonna chase my dreams, and I’m not gonna stop until I achieve my goals. Watching Tre get through everything he’s gone through – always happy, always joyful – it just makes you realize that when you believe in yourself, anything is possible!”

Kyle encourages anyone watching the video or reading this article to adopt an animal, especially special needs animals. They have a lot of love to give, and they’ll inspire you to become better yourself.

“It will change your life, I’m telling you.”

Kyle is the perfect person to own a three-legged dog, actually, because he works as an occupational therapist. Being so used to helping people recover and develop skills for everyday life, he poured all that knowledge into his dog. Now, Kyle offers “1-on-1 ninja sessions” for anyone training for competitions or wanting to increase their fitness. He brings Tre along as a therapy dog to make the experience even more fun!

Final thoughts on adopting a three-legged dog

Having a three-legged dog, like any animal with a disability, does come with challenges, but it’s well-worth it. You’ll give them a loving home as well as help them learn to live (and thrive!) with their disability. However, you’ll need to make sure you have the time and resources to take care of a special needs pet. They made need therapy and surgeries, which can get expensive. Most importantly, though, they just need patience and lots of love.

15 Good Morning Texts to Send Someone You Love

Sending your partner good morning texts is a sweet way to let them know that you are thinking of them. It is quick to do and won’t interrupt either of your morning routines. The best part is that when you send good morning texts, your loved one knows that they are important to you.

Another bonus of sending good morning texts is that it causes the person that you love to think of you, too. If they think about you first thing in the morning, they’ll likely think of you throughout the day, as well.

You don’t have to worry about sending the right thing or make it a stressful process for yourself. Just say what you think, and your partner will love it.

Fifteen Good Morning Texts to Send Someone You Love

Good morning texts can be short and straightforward because the goal is to let them know that they are on your mind. Or, you can be a little more creative and have fun with it. If you need some ideas to help you get started, here are some ideas for good morning texts.

good morning texts1. I woke up today thinking that even with the world constantly changing around us, my love for you will never change.

The world is constantly changing, but don’t allow your partner to think that your love will change, too. Start the day by assuring your partner that you will continue to love them despite anything going on in the world. When they read this text message first thing in the morning, they will start their day feeling happy and loved.

2. Good morning to the most important person in my life. You deserve nothing but positivity today.

When you love someone, finding ways to make them smile is essential. Remind them that they are important to you, and send some positive vibes their way. This simple text message will likely make their entire day as they get started on the right path.

3. I miss your smile, and I hope that I can see it today.

By telling your partner that you miss their smile, you will probably make them smile. Even if you aren’t there to see it, just knowing that you brought a smile to their face can make you feel happier. Follow it up with your wish to see them today, and you might end up with plans for that evening.

You never know what kind of day your loved one is having, so finding ways to make them smile can be just what they need. Plus, letting them know that you want to see them will make the relationship even stronger.

4. I am counting down until I can see you again.

Let your partner know that you are excited to see them again. Sometimes, people convince themselves that their loved ones don’t want them around. If you start the day by assuring your partner that you want to see them, they’ll be ecstatic all day long.

Plus, it lets your partner know that you are looking forward to spending time together. Knowing that you think of them first thing in the morning and make plans to spend time together will assure them that your relationship is the real thing.

5. I dreamt of you last night, and I’ll be thinking about you all day, too.

When someone makes it into your dreams, they have made a significant impact on your life. Don’t hide this fact from those that you love. Make sure you share the dream with them so that it makes their entire day, too.

Let the person that you love know that they are always on your mind. It will make them feel special and loved, which will help you strengthen your bond.

6. I started my day thinking of you and wanted to let you know that I hope you have a great day.

Nothing will make someone’s day more than knowing that someone they care deeply about is thinking about them. So, never hesitate to send a quick text message when you are thinking of your loved one. One text can make a big difference in someone’s day.

If they are having a bad morning, this message will cheer them up. On the other hand, if your partner is having a good morning already, it’ll only make it even better. This type of text message is never a bad idea to send.

7. Good morning to the one person that makes my heart flutter.

While it might be a little cheesy, it will make your loved one smile. This message singles your love out (in a good way) and makes them feel special.

best friend8. I just wanted you to start the day by letting you know that thinking of you makes me incredibly happy.

Your partner will love to start their day knowing that they bring you happiness. They want to make you happy, and they won’t know if you are unless you tell them. Don’t leave the person you love wondering if they are enough for you and if your happiness is a concern.

Plus, they’ll be thrilled to know that you love them that much. Make sure your partner never has to second-guess things by sending sweet good morning texts like this one.

9. There’s only one thing I want to do right now, and that is to tell you that I love you.

When you make your partner a priority, your relationship will highly benefit from that. This message will affirm for your partner that you love them, and it will give them happy feelings all day long. Plus, it’ll make them want to reach out to talk or see you in person, too.

Let the person you love know that they are the only thing they want to spend their time on. Sure, you might have other interests and loved ones, but letting them know they are important can make a huge difference.

10. You motivate me to be a better person, and I can’t wait to start working toward our future together.

The right person in your life will encourage you to be a better person. Even if you were a good person before, they make you want to keep learning and growing. When you can be this way with a person, you can truly start doing things to set up a happy future together.

If you have found this person, let them know by sending them this sweet text in the morning. It will make them appreciate you and the efforts you put into the relationship more. Plus, it will let them know that you are serious about the relationship and planning a future together.

11. I’m sad I didn’t wake up next to you, so I wanted to let you know you’re on my mind.

If you didn’t get to wake up next to your love, you aren’t the only one that is sad about it. Let your partner know that you’re sad because they’re probably feeling it, too. It’ll help the two of you connect even when you’re away from each other.

Plus, anytime you let your partner know that you are thinking of them, it’ll make them happy. Doing these little things while the relationship is good keeps it strong and develops your bond even more.

12. I wake up with a smile on my face just knowing that you are in my life.

If you smile just by thinking about the person you love, don’t keep it a secret. Let them know how happy they make you, and they’ll keep being the great person they already are.

Not only will it make them happy, but it will make them want to spend more time with you, too. Plus, your partner will feel validated that they chose someone that cares so much about them.

13. I hope you have the perfect day today.

Wishing the best for the person that you love is thoughtful, kind, and loving. Your partner will feel special, and they will look for the good things in their day a little more than usual. You can give them that first boost of positivity if you send them this text message first thing in the morning.

14. I am so lucky to have you in my life.

When you fall in love with the right person, you truly are lucky to have them. Let them know that they make you feel like the luckiest person on earth. They’ll appreciate the text message, and they’ll love that you feel that way.

15. Good morning! I hope you woke up today feeling good about yourself because you are perfect to me.

With this good morning text to start their day with, your loved one is sure to feel great all day long. Instead of focusing on their insecurities or flaws, they’ll see what you see. Put a smile on their face right from the start, and you’ll both feel good about it.

How to Say No (Without Hurting Feelings)

For many people, saying no is difficult because they don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. They don’t want to seem like the bad guy, so they sacrifice their needs or desires for others. Luckily, you can learn how to say no without hurting feelings, saving your well-being and relationships simultaneously.

There will be instances where the other person is unhappy no matter how you handle it, but most people are understanding. If someone cannot accept your answer without becoming angry, they’re likely a toxic person anyway. Reasonable people will understand and appreciate your honesty, even if they are disappointed.

Saying yes to everything can harm your health as it causes emotional exhaustion and unnecessary stress. Some of the other issues that may arise when you say yes to everything include the following:

  • a decreased sense of worth in the eyes of others and yourself
  • missing out on opportunities and experiences
  • disingenuous behavior
  • burnout
  • relationship problems
  • poor decision making

Psychologists found that being unable to say no stems from childhood trauma, but you can get past it. When you can learn how to say no without hurting feelings, you can achieve your highest potential. You must put your life and well-being ahead of anything else.

How to Say No Without Hurting Feelings

Learning to say no is a concept that most people understand. However, you might wonder how to tell someone no without being rude. Try these nine techniques that explain how to tell someone no–politely.

how to say no without hurting feelings1. Be Rational

The first step to saying no is to be rational and recognize that you don’t have to please everyone. You can’t always avoid conflict or disagreement, but you can’t allow that to force you into saying yes. Subconsciously, you might try to avoid the discomfort of someone not taking it well, so remind yourself that you don’t have to please others.

Other times, you must be rational in knowing when you shouldn’t say no at all. If you want to say no because you’re afraid to try something new, consider whether you will regret it later. Likewise, you might want to avoid saying no to your boss or authority figures.

When deciding whether to say yes or no, you must consider whether it aligns with your current priorities. Additionally, think about if it will cause you to compromise something important. If you rationalize and consider these things, you will quickly say no.

2. Be Honest

When you’re telling someone no, it might seem like it’ll be easier to tell a lie. Your best option is telling the truth, though. Telling a lie tends to backfire, and people pick up on it quickly and lose trust in you.

Plus, if the person knows you are lying, it will hurt their feelings and cause issues. If they don’t realize the lie right away, they might try to suggest a new plan. Their suggestions will only make things awkward, and you’ll have to try to devise more ways out of it.

Be honest from the start, and they’ll respect you for being straightforward. Avoid giving false hope because it’ll make the other person hopeful when you already know you’ll say no. Tell them immediately if you want to say no without hurting their feelings.

3. Tell Them The Reason For Saying No

Telling the person why you’re saying no can save many hurt feelings. Rather than just saying no, give them a reason so they don’t misunderstand. Explaining yourself ahead of time can prevent these misunderstandings altogether.

When your reason for saying no is because of your personal beliefs and values, tell them that. Don’t try to talk them out of their lifestyle, but being honest that yours is different will garner more respect.

If your reason is simple, such as you can’t take on any more commitments, vocalize that. You can also say that you don’t want to, but make sure to thank them for the offer or invitation. When learning to say no without hurting feelings, telling the truth might be challenging, but it will get easier.

4. Choose The Right Words

Psychologists explain that people give off micro expressions when they are trying to conceal their emotions. Unfortunately, these expressions give away your true feelings quickly. You can counteract those involuntary expressions by using kind words, though.

Use a friendly tone, look the person in the eye, and give them a positive response even as you say no. Let the person know that while you appreciate the thought, you aren’t the right person. Phrasing it this way deflects negativity as they recognize that you are kind and not condescending.

One article explains that using the words “I don’t” instead of “I can’t” can make a difference, too. People who use “I don’t” tend to stick to their statement and can’t be persuaded to give in. Using “I don’t” will empower you, helping you resist temptation or pressure.

how to say no without hurting feelings5. Suggest An Alternative

If you truly want to do something and plan to follow through, suggest an alternative. Offer to try and rearrange your schedule or figure out a different time that would work for both of you. If you don’t want to do what the person suggested, you can even think of another activity or event entirely.

When you suggest an alternative, the person won’t have their feelings hurt by your refusal. It will reaffirm that you like them and enjoy spending time with them, even if you can’t agree to something right now. If all else fails, you could suggest another person that they could ask instead.

Sometimes your boss might ask you to take on more, and your schedule is already full. When this happens, suggest they help you reprioritize the tasks you already have on your list. This suggestion will politely let them know that you cannot take on more right now.

6. Find The Perfect Timing

Finding the perfect timing is essential when it comes to learning how to say no without hurting feelings. Most of the time, the best time to say it is as soon as the person asks. Immediately saying no doesn’t cause anyone to get their hopes up.

Plus, saying no right away might prevent the person from dropping hints or continually explaining how it will benefit you. When you get it over with right away, the person will move on without any hard feelings.

If you can’t say no right away or need more time, tell them that you need more time to think. You don’t always have to say no immediately, so finding the perfect timing for your situation depends on your priorities. Don’t ask for more time if you know for sure that you will say no, though.

7. Don’t Feel Guilty For Saying No

People often believe that saying no causes hurt feelings every time, so they tend to feel bad. However, experts explain that most of the time, you aren’t hurting anyone’s feelings. Instead, your thoughts and feelings convince you that the other person is mad or upset.

The next time you feel guilty for saying no, remember that the person’s feelings likely aren’t hurt. You have no reason to feel bad if their feelings aren’t hurt. Even if their feelings are hurt, you have to prioritize your well-being, and you shouldn’t feel guilty for that, either.

8. Compliment Them Before Saying No

Before telling someone no, say something kind to buffer the refusal. If someone asks you to see a movie, tell them that you’d love to but that you can’t that day. They will be happy that you said you want to spend time with them, avoiding excess disappointment.

Even better, give a compliment before saying no, and then follow up with another good statement. Adding to the movie scenario, after you refuse, tell the person that you want to plan for another time and ask them to reach out. By adding this positive statement to the end, they’ll accept your current refusal gracefully.

Simply put, thank them for thinking of you, give your refusal, and then end the conversation with a positive comment. When you’re polite and offer positivity, it will be easier for the other person to accept it without hurting their feelings.

9. Practice Your Speech

If you don’t have to say no immediately, practice saying it before facing the person. When you’re confident, you are less likely to give in to pressure, and you’ll have the right words prepared. This way, no one’s feelings are hurt, and you don’t have to feel bad afterward.

As you practice your speech, think about your body language and tone of voice. You want to say no without seeming rude or disinterested as you turn down the offer.

You can also start practicing saying no by beginning with more minor things. The more you say no, the easier it becomes, giving you the courage to do it about bigger things.

Use these tips rather than taking on more than you can handle or agreeing to things you don’t want to do. You can learn how to say no without hurting feelings, allowing you to refuse offers or requests gracefully. More importantly, you need not feel guilty.

Practice these ideas, and you will quickly see that learning to say no without being rude is a game-changer.  Your confidence will increase, and you can live the life you desire.

20 Positivity Statements to Help Recover from Lost Love

When you try to recover from a lost love, you might struggle to shift your mindset sometimes. Your negative emotions might get the best of you, or you might be angry at yourself. If this is the case for you, these positive statements can help you recover.

It is normal to be sad after experiencing lost love, and there is no timeframe for your healing process. Keep living your life, however, and moving on even amidst the sadness.

20 Positivity Statements to Help Recover from Lost Love

These positivity statements will help you remember all that you have to live for. They can help you see what you should focus on, which will help you recover sooner.

lost love1. I am strong and confident, and I know that I will recover from this.

You can overcome anything as long as you remember how strong you are. Stay confident, and remember that you are a great person no matter what. Hold your head high, and use this affirmation anytime you need a reminder.

2. I am filling my life with positivity as I work to recover.

When a negative thought creeps in, replace it with a positive one. Changing your mindset is much easier after you have repeated this positivity statement, though. Repeat the affirmation each morning, and it will help you look for all the good in your life.

When you recognize the positive things in your day, it will help with your recovery process. You will find little bits of joy throughout the day, reminding you that the world will go on, and so will you.

3. I am open to all of the new opportunities available to me.

When you have lost love, it is hard to pay attention to all the new possibilities you have now. As part of a couple, there are likely things you couldn’t do before that you can now. Instead of wallowing in thoughts of what you lost, look for new experiences that weren’t an option before.

4. I am healing and rediscovering myself as I start over.

As you work on recovering from a lost love, focus on rediscovering yourself. You are continually changing, so now that you have time alone, rediscover who you are and who you want to be. Spend time self-reflecting and improving yourself so that you’ll be ready for anything when the time comes.  o

5. I appreciate the special people that are still with me.

Just because one person left your life doesn’t mean that you are alone. Use this affirmation to think of all the special people who didn’t leave your life. You are surrounded by love, and you don’t need a partner to reaffirm that fact.

6. I love myself no matter what has happened.

It can be easy to blame yourself when your love has ended, but you shouldn’t. Everything happens the way it is supposed to, so don’t beat yourself up over things you can’t control. No matter what the situation is, continue loving yourself and taking care of your wants and needs.

7. I am worthy, and I offer special things to the people in my life.

Despite what anyone says, you are worthy and valuable to those in your life. The people that care about you see what you bring to the relationship, and they love having you in their life. Don’t let one person make you feel like you aren’t good enough.

8. I am living in the present and enjoying the people and things in my life.

By focusing on the present, you are helping yourself recover from lost love. When you take your mind off your pain and heartache, you can experience joy again and embrace each moment.

Living in the present will help you see that your life is more than just what you lost. Plus, it will remind you that you have so much to keep living for. Don’t let yourself become all-consumed in your lost love, and instead, focus on making the present a happy experience.

9. I am giving myself the love that I deserve.

You can’t always count on anyone else to love you in the way you deserve, but you can count on yourself. Use this affirmation as a motivator for self-love and self-care because you deserve it.

10. I choose to live happily, even as I work to heal.

Your life doesn’t have to be perfect for you to live happily. Even as you are hurting and trying to heal, you can still find things to be happy about.

Choose happiness over all other emotions, and do whatever you can to bring moments of joy to your life. You are in control of your feelings, so you are the only one that can choose to rise above the sadness.

breakup11. I am turning this situation into a positive experience.

Even if it initially seems like a negative experience, you can change it to a positive one. By thinking of all the things that you can now do, you have begun the process already. Think of the experience as an opportunity to focus your time and energy on becoming a better version of yourself.

If you think of all that you can do to improve yourself, you will see how the situation can be favorable. Once you find your true love, you likely won’t have this undivided time for self-improvement again, so take advantage now.

Plus, another positive is that now you know that this love was not meant for you. With that knowledge, you can recognize that the right person is still out there for you. Now that you are available for when they come into your life, you can think more positively.

12. I will find true love, but I have to be patient.

When it feels like you will never recover, repeat this positivity statement. It will help you remember that you will find true love when the time is right. In the meantime, continue being patient and using this affirmation to help you recover.

13. I am putting all of my energy into the things going right in my life.

Instead of wasting your energy on the negative aspects of your life, change your thought process. Put that energy to good use by fostering the things that are going well. If you put your energy into those things, you will reprioritize and heal more quickly.

14. I know that there is someone out there that will want me precisely as I am.

If you ever have the thought that you should change who you are, use this affirmation. There would be nothing wrong with you, even if the person that you lost didn’t see your worth.

Someone out there will cherish you just the way that you are. Stay true to yourself, and the perfect partner for you will come when the time is right.

15. I love myself more each day.

Use this positive affirmation each morning as you get ready for the day. Making it a daily habit will manifest it, and you will find that your self-love truly does grow more every day. With self-love, you will recover from your lost love and move forward happily.

16. I have inner peace, and this loss will not break me.

The more often you repeat this, the more accurately it will apply to your life. If you convince yourself that you are experiencing inner peace, it will come true. With inner peace, you are strong enough to overcome, and your loss can’t break you.

17. I am healing, and I embrace the changes happening within me.

As you repeat this, visualize emotional healing. With affirmations and visualization, your recovery process will be much easier.

When you embrace the changes in your life, you can turn them into positive experiencing that improve your life long term. Don’t miss out on the opportunity for a beneficial fresh start.

18. I recognize the beauty and excitement that a fresh start brings.

While endings aren’t always happy experiencing, you can use this affirmation to shift your mindset. Rather than thinking of it as an ending, think of it as a fresh start. You can now do whatever you want to do and work towards your dreams and goals without interference.

Plus, you can go to new places and meet new people. There is an entire world out there, so look for the small glimmers of beauty and embrace the excitement.

19. I am releasing the things that I can’t control.

You can’t control the way someone else feels. When you are experiencing lost love, you must release them so that you can begin to recover. You can only control yourself, so do whatever you can to move on and make a better life for yourself.

20. I am strong, and I will not give up.

Some days will be more difficult than others, but you can’t give up. Even on the most challenging days, you must find the motivation to keep moving forward and living your life. Use this affirmation to encourage yourself to keep fighting.

Meet an Amazing Pet Duck Who Thinks He is a Dog

Elway, a rescued pet duck, lives with eight dogs (his best friends). And he seems to think he’s a dog himself. His owner Lindsay drove 5 hours to an animal rescue to get him when he was just 4 weeks old. When they got back home, all six of the dogs they had at the time greeted them, wagging their tails with anticipation.

“It was probably right there and then that Elway took to the dogs and started just hanging out with them, even though we do have other ducks here on our property,” Lindsay said.

Elway always seems to want the company of his dog brothers and sisters and acts like one of the pack himself. Lindsay says he’s learned where his dinner time feeding area is, just like the dogs have. He also flies onto the couches to cuddle with the dogs and takes naps with them.

Elway has a best buddy.

“When he’s not doing that, you can usually find him snuggled up with one of our dogs on the dog bed,” she said.

Out of all the dogs, Elway seems to connect the most with their 3-pound chihuahua named Stout. Lindsay says Stout was a puppy around the same time that they got Elway as a duckling, so they grew up together.

“They definitely like to go on all of the adventures and have all of the fun together, no doubt about that.”

A pet therapy duck?

They’ve actually taken Elway to nursing homes, elementary, middle and high schools, preschools, and even hospitals. Little did they know their pet duck would grow up to become a therapy animal and make people smile. They even put him on a leash, just like their dogs!

In the hospitals and nursing homes, some of the patients who use wheelchairs hold Elway’s leash while he pulls them around. It brightens their day to be able to interact with Elway and gets their minds off their struggles for a while.

Elway, the duck, hitting the town.

Because Elway grew up around dogs, he acts very friendly and docile with strangers. Even with a small crowd of people standing around him, he doesn’t seem phased and actually loves the attention!

“Making an impact, a positive impact, on other people’s lives is the message that Elway would like to share with everybody,” Lindsay said.

She says even though he’s different than his brothers and sisters, he makes people smile, and that’s what counts. Ducks don’t normally become therapy animals, but the pet duck Elway is special. Even though he doesn’t have paws or fur, he brings people joy with his own personal charm and cuteness, just like dogs do.

“Elway has most certainly dubbed himself dog number 7 in our house, and I don’t think any of us would have it any other way.”

He sure does seem to fit right in with the family and gets along wonderfully with the other pets. He does everything with the dogs, and they seem to consider him one of their own. On his Instagram page, it seems he enjoys walks on the beach, hanging out at the pier, and cuddling with the dogs the most. Of course, he has a pretty busy schedule as a therapy animal, but in his downtime, Elway loves adventures.

He’s pretty well-known in his town and has even been featured on the local news in Connecticut! Elway is truly a lucky duck, getting to see life outside the animal rescue and living with a loving family on a farm.

Final thoughts on rescuing a pet duck

When you think about animal rescue, you probably think of dogs, cats, and other common housepets. Most people don’t realize that ducks get abandoned just like other animals do, and for some of the same reasons. Well-meaning parents may buy ducklings at feed stores. But as they grow older, they lose their fuzzy, cute appearance. They need a lot more time and care than many people can give. And then the owners end up releasing them into the wild illegally.

Oftentimes, owners will set their pet duck free at public or private ponds. Unfortunately, domestic birds don’t have the same survival instincts as wild fowl and usually can’t fly. They depend on humans to feed and protect them, so when left alone, the ducks have no idea how to survive. They can become victims of predators in the area, other birds, or even humans.

If you have pet ducks that you can no longer care for, take them to a sanctuary or animal rescue. That way, they will get the proper care and get to live a long, happy life protected from predators. All animals deserve our love because they bring so much joy and comfort into our lives. You may not automatically think of a duck as a pet. But Elway shows that we can find love in the most unlikely places sometimes.
