5 Differences Between a Soulmate and a Life Partner

There are many misconceptions about the term soul mate and that of a life partner. Let’s explore the differences.

A soulmate is someone who comes into your life to teach you, enrich you, push you and transcend you into a higher state of being and consciousness. A life partner is a companion whom you trust and depend on during your life.

Here are 5 differences between a soulmate and life partner:

1. A soul mate fulfills a lesson in your life.

Soulmates can enter your life masked as friends, family members, and lovers. They fill a passion and desire that needs to be learned. Once the assignment and guidance is completed a soul mate usually exits the picture, oftentimes leaving an inconceivable amount of heart ache.

A life partner has similar interests in your life. This person is the cheerleader, the pillar of strength and support that encourages you to take risks.

Unlike the soulmate, a life partner sticks around regardless of what obstacles and challenges are ahead. Life partners are spiritually and emotionally connected without egotistical notions.

2. There is a huge difference in soul connections.

Soulmates have a deep connection through heart and consciousness. They hit the ego and bring about turmoil. The relationships are intense and full of transitions.

These beautiful experiences usually end in broken hearts. Soul mates bring with them karmic lessons that need to be completed in this incarnation.

Life partners arrive at a moment when there is self love and acceptance. You are no longer needing to fulfill an emptiness that cannot be explained. These partners join you with similar stories. They are there for the long haul.

A soulmate’s purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you have to tranform your life.” ~ Elizabeth Gilbert

3. There is an attraction that goes beyond this timeline.

When you meet your soulmate, you feel as if you have known them forever. You understand each other and have similar ways of thinking. Your childhoods have similar stories.

This is where the intensity in soul mates starts. There is a “knowing” that magnetically attracts you to each other. These relationships can be chaotic and destructive since there are levels of mirroring one another: the flaws and habits.

Whereas, life partners come from different paths and backgrounds. The differences enhance the emotional connection. You want to know more and learn from each other. You feel at ease in their presence, and this turns into a friendship that is profound and everlasting. Love grows with each passing day.

Important encounters are planned by the souls long before the bodies see each other.” ~ Paulo Coelho

4. A soul mate knows you intuitively.

There is a higher connection between thinking and feeling. You know each others’ thoughts and desires. Soulmates do not need words to convey their ideas and emotions. They have been where you are. They know how it is to feel a certain way.

Life partners are attracted to one another physically and crave to learn the other’s values. The relationship is based on logical and intellectual stimulation rather than an emotional one driven by soulmates full of highs and lows.

5. When you meet your soulmate, you have just had a huge life experience.

Soulmates arrive at a specific time when something needs to find closure. Amazing lessons come through these relationships. The love that is shared is ecstatic and sometimes full of hard obstacles. These two people are trying to find footing in a relationship that brings out the best and worst in each other.

The relationship with a life partner is easy. It begins without work. It continues to connect through the current day-to-day events.

There is no past or future stories that manipulate the union. There is just right now. These relationships have healthy marriages because both sides are ready to create a oneness while still remaining in their own individuality and authenticity.

It is very possible that your soulmate can also be your life partner. And, it is also possible that the relationship with a life partner can become a profound soul connection.

The biggest difference between a life partner and a soulmate is that one is a choice and the other one is not. There is no better or worst in these two types of relationships. Your soul and your connections create these special bonds. Each person that enters your life is a teacher and student.

Your soul mate makes you feel entirely intact, like no piece is missing from the puzzle. A life partner, on the other hand, can be a great supporter and long-time companion, but is limited in his or her capacity to enrich your spirit.” ~ Dr. Carmen Harra

  1. Oh my goodness…This is so true, and amazing????????????
My girlfriend, and bestfriend(feels like former) is or was my soulmate….I know that her job with me is done, and sometime it’s heart breaking but I have also at the same time just met my life partner,..LIFE????

  2. Congratulations! Your post contains some interesting distinctions worth reflecting on, for sure.

If what you say is true, then folks who get together with a soulmate and have children can look forward to challenges, changes, and the ultimate loss of the other parent of their children, by definition. Then, is it up to them to settle for a life partner after that with whom to also co-parent?

After over thirty years of working with individuals and couples, I disagree with your soulmate vs life partner distinctions as mutually exclusive. Cohesive as the post sounds, it’s troubling in its simplicity. Relationships are anything but simple.

I think that meeting a soulmate is an overwhelming feeling of finally being home. It is a unique moment of validation, and that continues throughout the relationship. The relationship encourages growth while maintaining mutuality. It is an incredible combination of putting on your slippers and comfortably settling in, and, keeping the curiosity, fascination, and mystery alive, living on the green and growing edge.

I certainly agree that, with soulmates and life partners, we are teachers and students to each other.

I equally certainly disagree that “The relationship with a life partner is easy. It begins without work.” Relationships take attention, intention, and…wait for it…work! Staying curious about each other, interested and growing together is not without its ups and downs, along with surprises, upsets, and unmet expectations. It seldom is smooth sailing all the time after the honeymoon and hormones phase (and, often before then, as well.)

With your distinctions, I wonder what you think about the possibility of finding both a soulmate and a life partner in the same person? Perfect result, in my opinion!

Love to hear your further thoughts. Thanks again.

  3. Soulmate is a fantasy concept since you can’t define soul let alone identify it’s suitable character

  4. I have to say – I completely disagree. A soulmate is “someone you were destined to meet,” so it could definitely be a life partner, or a friend, family member or someone else. A soulmate may is there to help you fulfill a destiny, to learn something. Some may be with you forever and some may leave when the lesson is learned.

I do also believe there is a difference between someone who’s in your soul group (or who is at your same vibrational level) and someone outside your group.

  5. This is by far the BEST piece I have ever read about soulmates and life partners. Fantastic and so spot on!!!

  6. This is the big difference between a soulmate and a life partner. The emotions run so high and HOT they can sometimes burnout. It’s sad that this happens. I sincerely wish it didn’t.

  7. Interesting…well my husband is my life partner, but I also think he is my soulmate. We have been through a lot together, but through thick and thin and many years later, we have come through it. It has not always been easy and there have been times when we thought about giving up, but we understand each other, love one another, and are willing to go through things together.

  8. I’m a widow and I have found another I love with all my heart. Your explanation is absolutely perfect! Thank you for the beautiful thoughts and lesson!

  9. This is amazing I have met and recently lost my soul mate she was my world and always will be. It’s sad that our paths will not cross probably ever again but I hope she knows how important she was and always will be to me. She brought out the best in me and also the worst she made me feel something I never thought I would feel but she also made me break down walls that I put up for a reason that are now firmly up and will be probably for the rest of my life but I’m not angry at her for that. She showed me my weakness was love and I thank her for that. Wherever we are or whatever happens I’ll always be looking up to our star and praying that she gets her one day. Amazing woman amazing experiences that will last forever in my heart and no matter what happens all I will ever see is the smiling beautiful angel I first met. Good luck tiger one day is out there live the life you want not the one you’ve been given xxx
